This is a very bad idea. The City Council need to look for other ways to meet the budget. The meals tax is already an unfair burden on small business owners in town.

I've lived in Charlottesville my whole life..I didn't, nore have I voted for any of the city council... ive witnessed this mayor try to shape this city into his vision or big plan..if its not in his vision its thrown out..not saying he hasn't made some great benifits but his vision hasn't been for the majority nor the minorities that work in the city that can't afford to live or eat in these high end eatery's..the meals tax should be reduced not made higher!!.the city concil and a city manger that gets a free home in the city? how about the rest of the hard working city workers.. they are the ones that deserve a free house..his salary should be enough!.if not he should seek employment elsewhere!

As a server in the city, heightened meals tax will decrease patronage at our restaurant. With so many restaurants in the city already, the business is thin and tenuous as it is. I struggle immensely just to pay rent and for my healthcare - please do not make my effort to survive even more impossible.

The record profits that currently provide a large restaurant tax revenue are a result of affordable prices to the customer. Raising the cost for us to go out to eat will eventually cause less consumer purchases, which will ultimately reduce the tax flow to the city. Keep our prices low and encourage more restaurants to create amazing food at affordable prices, the 1% additional business will have a long-term positive effect as compared to a tax hike.

The meal tax was initiated to pay for the Omni with the political promise that the tax would expire when the Omni was debt free...There should be no meal tax at all...it places a budeon on the restaunters and actually puts the town entreaupeners in a direct competition wit the county where there is no meal tax.
