Not only are you trying to house students in a disgusting, rundown MOTEL 6 that's frequently visited by prostitutes and drug dealers, you are are taking advantage of students and running this institution like a money making business rather than a university.

There are multiple benefits to living off campus. It teaches responsibilitys such as cleaning, cooking, timing your commute, and paying bills. It also helps you begin building your credit early. It is also much more affordable for students like myself who are paying rent and food as well as other life expenses. As a student who has lived on and off campus, my GPA was .8 higher on average off campus and I was taking 21 units at the time which is the more than I took at any time off campus. This is all while logging the same amount of hours at work. This has been the same with many of my friends who have expected a jump in GPA as well. I hope that the school will put a hold on moving all students on campus and instead begin with students who have not had the chance to live on campus which gives them the opportunity to prepare. I am grateful that I have been able to live in Lower Residence the past two years, and I was really looking forward to renting out a house with my friends my senior year of college. Having a house of my own would really allow me to get that breath of fresh air that I have been needing since the end of sophomore year. But I think what is even more important is how I would be able to grow in maturity, since having my own house would prepare me for what life will be like when I live on my own. Mandatory housing is a scam

Housing should not be mandatory, and if the school won't do anything about it, then they can suffer with the lack of enrollment in the future.

Despite this likely being lost in the comments I wrote it out anyways. I’ll be forwarding this to a few of the commandants at the very least. Although I have many reasons the mandatory on campus housing is a bad idea, I want to counter one argument I have heard campus staff quote in particular: living on campus significantly increases chances of graduation. First I place the burden of proof on the staff to prove this as I have not found any papers indicating significant retention rates or GPA increase for living on campus. I have only found the opposite. I found in “The Causal Effects of Campus Residency on College Student Rention” by Lauren T. Schuddle published in ‘The Review of Higher Education’ indicates the exact opposite of these claims. Further, though in my research I could find no studies that included military style or military universities, I examined the effects of boarding schools on mental health and social development., although not a precise match the greater sample size and striking similarities in culture and structure are considerably relevant. In the paper “Boarding School Syndrome: The Physcological Trauma of the ‘Privileged’ Child” Dr. Joy Schaverien examines the emotional patterns that arise from a boarding school environment (which is once again: very similar to our own school’s environment). It would be arrogant to not recognize the absolutely tremendous amount of stress compounded by the restrictive environment of the academy is causing significant distress to many of the students at this school. Providing at least some form of reprieve to students from the toxic environment of the academy should be the least the college can offer. And don’t try to dance around the issue and pretend the school environment is not toxic and harmful, or promise that things are changing. It’s very clear that they are changing for the worse.
