As an out of state student, I had to pay almost $8,000 a semester for room and board in largely outdated dorm facilities. Along with living on campus, I had no choice but to purchase a meal plan that only provided me with meals at very specific hours, if I was busy studying for a test and missed a meal I would be out of luck until a much later time. I lucked out last semester and managed to work out an off campus situation that runs me at total (food, rent, electricity, etc.) around $500 a month, its a unique situation (im living on a boat) but ive made it work and its reduced my costs to be completely manageable. I went from paying almost $12,000 a semseter for room/board and food, to only paying around $2,500. Now that Im 24, I wont be able to receive the loans that I was using to cover costs when I started, for the first two years. This means I will be back to paying the full room and board price, without any help from loans. I literally may not be able to afford it. This is completely unmanageable for a lot of us, and throwing this onto the students like this is downright shameful.

The administration's added requirement for upperclassman students to live on campus is arrogant and irresponsible. Many students (including myself) are financially burdened by the extremely high cost of on campus room and board. Many of us will be unable to fund our upperclassman years due now. Many of us thought upon enrolling that we would be able to be adults and live off campus our upperclassman years. I believe it is outright irresponsible to have all students live on campus, but believe even if these rules will go into place, the current students should be grandfathered into the previous rules with incoming classes informed on the administration's rule change. If the CMA admins do not want to listen to students we will have to see what the CSU program can do for us.

We are your adults and some older adults! How are we supposed to learn independence if we are forced to be spoon feed living on campus! I feel it should be the students decision to make where they live, not the schools!!!

Interesting that the school would give students the responsibility and duty to work and basically run a multi-million dollar vessel, and then take away off-campus housing rights . This is highly unprofessional; indeed, it should therefore be expected of Cal Maritime Administration

It is not an option for me to live on campus for several serious reasons that housing doesn’t seem to ever take seriously until I am forced to freak out on them about it. I’d be glad to share my reasons with anyone who inquires personally.

There are benefits to living on campus, and that can be a good choice for students for the first or second year. But to force students to live in a motel off campus without even a choice? It is a shame that this is even proposed. We are adults, and are enrolled in a California State University, we deserve a choice where we want to live, and we have the right to live in an environment that suits our educational needs. It is rediculously unfair that the people representing us as students in the administration would complacently go behind our backs and spend the money that was put forth by our tuition dollars and the pocket of the California taxpayer in order to fund the purchase of a run down motel to force students to live "on campus." I hope that this immoral proposition is removed immediately, which will happen if the CSU maritime administration have any respect for the students of Cal Maritime.

Will the school really respond to a petition? Has there been any kind of conversation with administration about what it will take to alter this plan? I hope this works, but I highly doubt this will change anything. They might hold a town hall to make you feel heard and roll the same plan out anyway, without any concern for student opinion. Students should look for other avenues to force housing and Cropper to respond. Not sure what that would be but a petition probably won’t be enough. Maybe press coverage or contacting CSU higher ups, maybe sharing this with alumni who donate to the academy?

If you compare the demographics of Vallejo to the demographics of CSU Maritime Academy, there is a huge mismatch. Colleges should server their community, and by requiring people to live on campus, it make a humongous financial barrier for locals to attend. Most CSUs have demographics that are similar to their community, but not CSUMA. I thought housing was in just before, however the issue is gaining traction now. CSU Maritime Academy is supporting a policy, that could be perceived as racist, keeping vallejo out of Cal Maritime.

As low as morale already is, this will deliver a sever blow to the student population. How does the school expect future generations of alumni to continue making donations when they make us leave here with such a terrible experience. I have never experienced such disregard for the student voice at any other campus. Being a CSU, there must be a way to have our opinions heard outside of our administration, because clearly they do not have OUR best interest at heart.
