Giving people demerits for signing a petition to change the way the school they PAY for is being run is a horrible offense at free speech. We are holding ourselves to a higher standard by creating a petition instead of going straight to a walkout or demonstration in hopes of shutting down campus. All that will come from attacking people signing this is an even larger divide between students and administration.

There are many cases where the quality of life off-campus, far supersedes that of on-campus living.
This is not only partaining to the cost savings, but as an invaluable segue into our leadership roles. Off-campus housing grants us the experience which provides us with the responsibilities of an adult and encourages the development or our core values.
Not only do we learn self reliance, but we learn time management, leadership and community responsibilities, we learn how to cook, maintain hygiene and discipline standards as well as how to live together and sharing responsibility just as it will be on a ship. Cohabitation, family dinners, and chore delegation, even dealing with social dilemmas just can not be replicated in an on-campus dorm situation.
The community also benefits greatly as the intigration of student renters not only brings money back into the community but it also creates a bond between the Maritime academy and the city of Vallejo.
Not to mention a school should be focused on the students well being and the quality rather than the quantity or revenue it can obtain.

This Petition has just come to the attention of the CSUM Housing Department. I would like to start off that I am appalled with the overall sense of disrespect towards myself, the administration, and the CSU System as a whole. As Cadets, you are held to a higher standard of honor and integrity. Your petition means nothing to me and will not change the direction the housing system is heading. You do not understand what it takes to run and finance a successful housing program. The system is not failing you, you are all failing the system. The Office of the Commandants and President Cropper have been notified of this absurdity. It should also be noted that the cadets foolish enough to list their names on this petition will be receiving 30 demerits upon approval from The Dean of Students. This issue will also be addressed by President Cropper During formation Friday Morning

Living on campus for me is twice as expensive as living off campus at the moment. It is nice to come home at the end of the day and unwind somewhere off campus, away from the things that are stressing me out.

Once again our wonderful Mr. Cropper and his administration has chosen to keep the students of CMA in the dark about this decision. By not asking for any input from students who actually experience Cal Maritime life on campus Cropper and the deans are only acting in the financial interests of making a profit and getting deep into the pockets of the students and their families, which has been made very clear with subpar facilities on campus and the inaccessibility to parking near Mcallister residence as well as the admin. lot. This issue causes students to park in areas that the university marks as restricted parking during late hours and those students are then ticketed for. Also, the quality of mess deck is something this school should be utterly ashamed of. Seeing videos of live bugs in the produce that is provided to the students is unacceptable. Instead of purchasing another musty and dilapidated building to herd more kids into and collect a profit, the school should have put the money towards expanding parking and improving on infrastructure. There should be no wonder as to why you see students are unhappy with campus life here. No one will discuss it, but it affects students psychologically. In addition the safety of the students seems to clearly be overlooked. Everyone knows the type of people that currently reside at the motel, it is especially alarming when you attend your first week of school and a stray bullet hits and shatters a window of the athletic center near the motel 6 and instead of notifying students they cover it up and replace the window the next day. So, thank you CMA for all the effort you do for us. Go Keelhaulers!

Making students live on campus all four years hurts the students in many ways. First, it will cost more to live on campus, along with signing up for a meal plan, putting us further in debt to the school. Second, it will restrict us from learning things like paying a lease and bills, and won’t be able to build credit for when we graduate. Motel 6 should be an extension to the dorm rooms for the growing cal maritime population for the future and should not hinder the current students who meet the original criteria to live off campus

If Cal Maritime is going to become a full CSU, then make it so that student living is adjusted accordingly. There should be the opposite: a request for students to stay on campus after the 3 semester period. Without proper space and facilities, forcing students of a continuously growing university to wedge 3 into a room that barely fits 1.5 people is unheard of and is quite frankly illegal. Yes, there is a plan for Motel 6 to be acquired by the CSU, but that has not happened. And if so, it still would not be enough to force students out of their free will to live where they want. There are many downfalls for students to remain on a campus that has no joy and filled with lifeless students that dread the day the moved in. A decision to force people to live somewhere is to create physical, emotional, and spiritual repercussions on the student population. If this is the land of the free, treat it as such. We attend CMA for hopes of a brighter future, not of one that tells us that our will to want to leave campus and develop as adults is not going to happen until "they" say so. Not only will harm befall the university's students and but also the institution itself as it could fall into a legal battle of non-compliant housing and building codes.

Opportunities of living off campus during college provides a crucial window into the responsibilities that accompany owning or renting your own house. CSUM claims to be instilling leadership and skills of independence into students, but in my eyes forcing students to living on campus is negatively impacting students lives while attending college. This is a right that students at other schools have, and I think that it should not be a question whether or not us students should have that right here. We most definitely should be allowed to live off campus, regardless of how much money we have or how old we are.

It's a shame that Cal Maritime teaches responsibility, leadership, and being a general adult, but won't allow its students to go off campus. Off campus living is one of the best ways for students to start understanding adult life since they have control over everything they want.
