I know a small Deaf community in remote northwestern Ontario that could really use some support and funding and accessibility. We need more interpreters and access.

I strongly believe in this petition. I also believe sign language should be taught in all schools. Hearing children would also benefit from learning this important & beautiful language

As a parent of two HH teens I can say I have personally experienced this. We were strongly discouraged from using ASL by medical professionals and even told it could be harmful to their learning in other areas. When we advocated for the use of a signing EA in school, once again medical professionals argued against it in a meeting saying it wasn't needed. What this does is creates a barrier for children and teaches parents that self advocacy is too hard or not worth the effort. Deaf/HH children deserve better.

From my experience, when I was one year until five half year old, I didn’t know ASL because I was in the oral program referred by the audiologist in 1977. I went to Manitoba School for the Deaf and had to learn ASL when I was five half year old. I was frustrated and emotional due to the language barrier and struggled to communicate. I really don’t want to see happening to innocent Deaf children. The children has rights to access their language for communication and education. I don’t want to see innocent Deaf children struggling, emotionally and suffering.

I do not want Deaf children to go through this today. I suffered language deprivation as a child. It was painful and damaging for me.

Those who don't live it should not be making decisions for those who do.
