when we are in a situation of high unemployment in the North East, how can these labour councillors who allegedly represent the workforce justify any type of pay rise?!

If the labour councillors are not satisfied with the allowances already on offer then they can resign. It is a voluntary position, they are not forced to do the job or put themselves forward for election in the first place. If they were really community spirited they would do it for nothing but expenses..

Remind me again when was the last pay rise recieved by the average public servant.... Was it anywhere near 24%???? Having served 13 years in the Army including Iraq and Afghanistan I have not recieved a real term pay rise for the last 6 years. We have been fighting a war for the las decade and we are awarded with our pensions being slashed!!!! This proposal is utterly disgusting you ought to be ashamed... You utter waste of skin!!! How about we give a 24% pay rise to nurses or teachers, not pencil necked bureaucrats who do not deliver in any respect!

There is no justification for this type of increase. Put the money back in the ot and use it to pay wages for someone facing unemployment from the Council.

There are far too many projects in the region which deserve this funding more than the councillors. A 24% rise is unrealistic and not in line with the inflation rate of our economy, especially when NHS workers cannot even get a 1% rise.
