The council finally abandoned the proposed zoning changes today. It has been a long and draining road to reach this point but I am relieved we kept our neighborhoods intact. We need to stay alert for future attempts to rush these plans forward without us.

“Eugene’s existing neighborhoods provide the foundation for the community’s overall livability.” (Envision Eugene 2012 Recommendation, Approved by Eugene City Council)

SOUTH WILLAMETTE NEIGHBORS

PETITION TO EUGENE CITY COUNCIL

As residents, business owners and/or property owners within, around and affected by the proposed South Willamette Special Area Zone (SW-SAZ), we respectfully request the Eugene City Council to suspend the adoption process for the proposed zone change and to develop a refinement plan to address land use and transportation policies that have broad community support as an appropriate plan for future evolution of the established residential neighborhoods and businesses in this area.

Further, we request the City Council to direct that this community‐based process be guided by Statewide Planning Goal 1, which requires meaningful involvement of a cross‐section of affected citizens in all phases of the planning process.

Further, we request the City Council ensure the outcome of this process fully and faithfully conforms to Envision Eugene Pillar #5: Protect, repair and enhance neighborhood livability.

Reaching 250 signatures feels heavy because it proves how many people truly feel ignored by this process. This road has been draining but your involvement keeps me moving forward.

The lecture from councilor Syrett Nov. 9 to those at the council meeting who spoke against the step backward made by the council in a 5-4 vote amounts to blaming the victim. The councilor conflated residents seeking to safeguard their R-1 zoning with entities contributing to a warming climate, despite the councilor having no knowledge of what any individual residents do in their personal practice to live responsibly. Councilors are expected to listen with respect to all speakers and return respect when they have the last word in commenting upon what has been said during the public forum. Councilor Syrett was condescending and judgmental, rather than exhibiting empathy. She should apologize.

I moved here for the R-1 zoning and the quiet streets. Destroying that for developers is a huge mistake. Don't let this happen to South Eugene.

Keep our neighborhood charm. The current plan just ignores what the actual people living here want. Stop this nonsense now.

This density plan is way too much for our area. Look at the traffic already. Slow down developers and talk to the people who live here.

"Save South Eugene" also means "Save Eugene Neighborhoods" -- in other words, what happens with SW-SAZ could also happen in other Eugene neighborhoods. Now's the right time to Stop -- Look -- React!

THEY ARE NOT LISTENING TO US! Envision Eugene meant something but now it feels like they just want to pave over everything.
