Altouugh I no longer live in Rockaway, I still have ties to the community through family and long term, some lifetime, friends, many with young children. Rockaway has struggled for years to get to the point it's at now. Hurricane Sandy laid us bare, but we beat the bitch, and came back ROCKAWAY STRONG!!! Please do not render our efforts to better our community, in spite of almost unbeatable odds, to again housing this homeless criminal element. We deserve better....Stop this shelter from being put in Rockaway...please!

While I am a major supporter of providing services to those in need and helping them reintegrate into the community, for-profit homeless shelters have limited success rates, particularly when placed in communities that do not have the resources or available jobs to support that process. Rockaway is a community that has had more than its fair share of ill-fated programs and is a community in which it makes little sense to open a new shelter due to limited local job availability, limited medical resources, and difficult commuting logistics for those seeking jobs outside of the local community.

Give Rockaway a break. We already have enough homeless and mentally ill being housed here. Please find somewhere more suitable to place a homeless shelter.

I am a middle school student who attends one of the schools that is 3 blocks away from where this shelter is proposed. During the nice weather I can cycle my bike to school. I will no longer be able to do this if this shelter opens with these homeless men. This is my home and my community that I love being a part of. It’s not fair on my fellow students who already deal with panhandlers, mentally ill and homeless people around our neighborhood. This is my home town and it’s being destroyed. We can not allow this! We will fight this! As a community!
