Stop Dumping On Rockaway

Aside from the 5,000 kids attending nearby schools, no one is mentioning the children living on the actual block and the direct impact this will have on their daily well being. At the age of 12, a current 101st street resident is discovering the middle school freedom of finally walking a short distance from the school bus to our front door! The daily swag this kid displays walking alone is electric! Up until this shelter announcement, cautiously but without fear being able to play in our front yard as any child should. We have now exposed our neighborhood children to the hype and unnecessary worry of this possible transition. It’s great that 120 lives get a new purpose in life but what about the 5,000 plus youthful spirits currently being destroyed for someone else’s second or third chance to get it right? Let our kids recover from the lingering stressors of Hurricane Sandy and truly feel at peace again in our community! More importantly, let all our children continue to own their confidence walking anywhere near 101st street!

This is totally unacceptable. Hundreds of children attend schools in the area. As a parent, I’m beyond frightened. Please, I beg the city to reconsider. Safety is my number one concern. Elected officials, as parents, how would you feel if a homeless shelter was being placed a mere few blocks from your home in a neighborhood teeming with children, schools and families trying their best to provide the best education, shelter and safety for their children? I have a little girl, and this terrifies me. PLEASE DO NOT MOVE FORWARD WITH PLACING THIS SHELTER IN A NEIGHBORHOOD OF HARD-WORKING FAMILIES!

There has to be a more sensible place on mainland Queens. The city shouldn't ruin another neighborhood, like they've done for past 40 years. The peninsula would eventually fold as a great community

Please leave Rockaway alone. They have had more than their fair share of homeless dumped on them over the years. When will this city realize the potential of rockaway?

Enough is enough. Rockaway is already doing more than most of the rest of the city. Maybe the idea is to make the Rockaway peninsula the Rikers Island for homeless and halfway houses and adult homes and schools for troubled children and waste management and whatever else is NIMBY for other neighborhoods like Park Slope.

Rockaway is already overloaded with residents who need more resources than we can provide!

Rockaway Beach already has most of the projects and nursing homes in Queens. Enough dumping on this town!

Please reconsider a homeless shelter in our beloved neighborhood that is still recovering from hurricane sandy. The neighborhood is not equipped to take on the responsibility of caring for the homeless.

This proposed project is a bad idea. Whatever happened to the idea of collaborating with the community on a major project instead of just dumping a plan on a community that is destined to fail?

Rockaway Beach is part of the Five Boroughs, there is no reason to treat us as if we are some kind of quick fix to any problem the mayor won’t find time for.

We are sensible, not insensitive! This shelter, within a stone’s throw of the school I work in, is a bad idea.

We are a compassinate community, but this is not right
