I am signing this petition, imploring the Catholic church that claims to be all about following our Creator God (but DOES NOT, because even Jesus showed His, & thus our, Father/Mother to be absolutely nonviolent) to turn away from her choice of being a WHORE & begin to follow Jesus' way of ABSOLUTE & BOUNDLESS COMPASSION. Please do not hear me as seeking to be only condescending to the Catholic Church. As a former Protestant worker, I ask the same of my past, so-called faith community; to actually turn to God, forgoing all connections with all violence. ("as much is possible within you"). Our society is murdering, raping, & pillaging both our culture & ALL other world cultures. Please join me in repenting of our personal & national sins. Maybe our Creator God will show us mercy, not allowing our own rapacious devices to destroy us, as they are destroying all that our world is, including putting ALL people & creatures in danger of extinction...

Displaying the flag on a church is a form of idolatry. Pope Francis has powerfully warned against the grave dangers of nationalism. We should heed his warnings.

The flag of the United States should not be hanging on the outside or inside of a Catholic Church.

I agree with this letter 100%. Even as an individual Catholic citizen I have refused to display the flag for the same reason. It has been co-opted to stand for militarism and American exceptionalism and is totally contrary to my beliefs as a citizen and as a Catholic. I do not even like to use flag stamps for that reason.

My concerns re this display: 1. Separation of Church and State. 2. An example of political activism - the bishops support of Trump vs their opposition to Obama. 3. An example of the bishops being silent about the blatant racism of President Trump. 4. The majority of bishops have remained silent about the children being traumatize at the border. 5. Compared to previous times this is a good example of those who administer this Shrine viz. The U.S. Bishops being blind to gospel values.

Flags in any place of worship stand as symbols of idolatry. Nationalism, exceptionalism, and violence are woven into the U.S. flag. I am currently showing my students Theologians Under Hitler, an important film that serves as a warning about using religion to support the nation-state. This display is deeply disturbing.

The firewall between church and state must be enforced especially with the rise of intolerant Christian fundamentalists. For the Cathedral to remove the flag will send the right message at the right time. Be a leader and correct the unnecessary blur between civil laws and the spiritual life.

Insidiously evil. The flag of violence is diametrically opposed to the Nonviolent Jesus of the Gospels and His Way of Nonviolent Love of friends and enemies. What it represents is not a way to eternal life

Flags displayed anywhere in or on churches confuse the nonviolent message of the Gospels with the violence of national policies. While opinions reasonably differ among Catholics regarding women's right to choose to give birth in all circumstances, the abuse and taking of life through "Homeland Security," INS, and military action is unquestionably opposed to our faith tradition. Please remove all flags. Thank you.

With Constantine the Church took on the values of the state and lost the values of Jesus. The same phenomena is happening today. This is one small step in the right direction.
