The leading cause of death for children aged 10-17 in Utah is suicide. Studies also show that LGBTQ youth take up a majority of these deaths. In fact, LGBTQ youth are, on average, 5x as likely to take their own lives than their cis identifying heterosexual peers. These rates are only continuing to increase, within the last 2 years Utah’s youth suicide rates have increased at a pace four times faster than the national average. These are staggering statistics. But, there is hope. We can lower these suicide rates as individuals within our communities. The next best step in decreasing these alarming rates is to allow and advocate for LGBTQ symbols in our public schools. This can decrease suicide rates by allowing LGBTQ youth to find support and creating safer school environments. Bans on LGBTQ symbols are harmful, and they will perpetuate youth suicide. My little sister, who identifies as bisexual, is in high school. I believe it to be harmful for her to feel that she needs to hide parts of herself to be fully accepted by society. It is unhealthy for her to believe parts of her are unlovable just because those parts of her make others slightly uncomfortable. Rainbows are also very beautiful. Just like our LGBTQ youth!
