STOP Action: Bohland Maxwell Bay Residences Development
We the citizens of Lake Minnetonka petition the LMCD, the City of Orono, and other
entities to stop the development proposed at the existing North Shore Marina site on Maxwell Bay.
BohLand has already done a preliminary road study review with Hennepin County with no recommendation for major road improvements to North Shore Drive. It has had a pre-application meeting with the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, who was "very helpful" and "excited about the opportunity to provide input" about the project. BohLand feels that the Erosion Control and Floodplain Fill permit they are required to obtain are "straightforward and should be a simple process." It also has had discussions with the City of Orono regarding storm water.
BohLand has had a big jump start on us. We need to stop this now.
Besides construction and environmental concerns with increased use of the lake, regular road traffic to and from this location year-round, safety concerns with increased regular use of the lake by the potential residents boating, among other concerns, we take issue with the high-density housing this proposal brings. Orono has a country-like feel despite being a suburb of a major metropolitan area, and one of the main reasons why it has enjoyed this experience is the lower density housing of the area. While BohLand states this project is a response to "down-sizing" and that there are not a lot of similar condo-style developments on the lake, there are none that we are aware of in Orono. This would be a first for Orono, and a turn in the wrong direction for the city.
