Stop the Potential spreading of the Novel coronavirus in schools of York Region, Ontario

Abby, I will guarantee you more people will die this year in Canada because of the flu than because of the Coronavirus. You are talking about a disease that, again, has only infected 3 people in Canada. That's 3, out of a population of 25 million. That's 3, out of months of people coming to and from China into Canada. Just. 3. People.

If you would be smart, you would put the facts and parameters involved in those other diseases and coronavirus next to each other and compare before assuming such comment. Precaution is better than assumption and perception. It seems some people learn it the hard way!

WHO declared Coronavirus to be an international emergency Please consider closing schools and let the kids learn from home. We have the technology to do that - google classroom. Some countries already closed their schools to protect their children.

Those on here claiming they can't be racist because they are Asian as well have no idea what they're talking about. Scroll down and read the comments from many Asians saying quarantine "those" Chinese people from China and keep "those" Chinese people out of "our" country. That's as racist as it gets. While I agree people should be concerned for the safety of their loved ones, there's no need for the racist garbage that's filling up this comment section. It's not helping your cause.

So? They did the same thing with the Ebola epidemic in 2014. And the Zika outbreak in 2016. Both of which never made it to Canada. This doesn't really change anything.

Sam, I appreciate your engagement here, but I don't think you quite get people's objections. 1. You might not be wanting to discriminate based on race, but your highlighting China as the source of concern, which is leading to people to point to Chinese individuals with suspicion. There's nothing out there to suggest that the Federal Health Department has 'failed' in it's procedures; this is just simple fear-mongering. Right now, several other countries have Coronavirus present... Should we isolate those who've been to such countries as well? If not... Why should we start talking about monitoring anyone who's been to China when this disease has yet to spread beyond the 3 people here in Canada? 2. No one here is saying the severity is comparable to flu. What I'm saying is that right now, the flu is the much MORE severe health crisis right now. The Chinese response to the Coronavirus is substantive, because there are many more people infected right now in China. Again, only 3 people are sick because of Coronavirus in Canada, and they have been quarantined. Comparably speaking, the flu is our respective health crisis, we have far more people in Canada that are at risk and will die of the flu this year. And you can very easily fight it by applying your concerns there, getting yourself vaccinated, and not worrying about Coronavirus until it actually demonstrates that it is a serious health issue in Canada. I get you are worried, but you can actually do more harm by being overly worried. Fixating over a virus that has yet kill anyone in Canada, while thousands die from the flu, won't help anyone. It'll have the opposite affect.

Kevin, your accusing Stephen of being a racist, and than your classifying all Chinese people as eating 'dogs, cats, bats, rats, etc'. It strikes me as rather peculiar that you cannot see the irony of your statements here. Malenia, you make a fair point, but even then, the choice of monitoring is racially biased. Coronavirus is now present not only China, but Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, France, and the United States. Shouldn't we put similar restrictions on those places as well? If the answer is no, the numbers are too low... Than I ask why 3 people infected here should force such aggressive efforts in the first place. This isn't about safety, this is about a judgement call on China, that if you've been to China you are automatically under suspicion of sickness. I'm going to repeat what I've said earlier. More people, right now, are dying or are at risk of the flu in Canada than of the Coronavirus. If you are truly concerned with the safety of children, focus your efforts there. Worrying about anyone who's been to China in your community while the disease is yet to spread beyond three people will only hurt more people than do good.

Polly, I'm not sure what world you live in where you think someone calling out racism is obviously racist, but considering your syntax choices, I can't imagine it is the most informed. If you want to say I am simply a 'fake account', rather than understand that asking school officials to monitor people from China for a disease that has thus far only infected 3 people in the whole of Canada, is racist... There's not much I can do to change your mind. But that doesn't excuse the fact that it is still racist, and there are other, better things you can do to ensure the health of your loved ones

These have been in my mind in the last few days, and I'd like to share with my fellow parents here. There are two opposing arguments which I hear a lot about taking extra precaution. Argument #1) This could raise a racism concern We are not suggesting to isolate anyone based on their race. Rather, we suggest anyone who has traveled to a Coronavirus outspread country in the past two weeks to be in quarantine. In this case, this just happens to be China. In fact, it is because the Federal Health Department failed to implement the necessary procedure which could lead many of us to consistently wondering whether the person beside us is a virus carrier. Argument #2) The severity is comparable to flu Well, I don't see the Chinese government quarantined multiple cities during the flu season. The population of the cities in isolation in China is comparable to the entire population in Canada. To quarantine such a massive population of people, they obviously knew that would create a severe impact on the country. Therefore, if the Chinese government has any other choices, and if the outbreak of the Coronavirus is not severe, I'm sure they would not sacrifice so much to isolate cities on such a big scale. Ironically, I genuinely hope that I'm wrong and just being over-worried. But the health being of everyone is important. (including those who disagree with my view). Wearing a seat-belt only after a car crash is too late.

“My people”? You mean Canadians? I’m Canadian by birth. Your mentality of “your people” verses “my people” is a perfect example of racism. I would be here defending anyone of any race. Were all those people on that plane to Australia “Chinese”, if not, then good on Australia. I’m only stating those who single out the Asian community as the only ones coming back from China as carriers as the virus. Last time I checked, non-Asian people visit China as well and they can also be infected. Whether or not I’m “lucky” to live here is not for you to say. You’re just as “lucky” as I am.

I am a Chinese Canadian from HK and have closely followed the news since early January that I believe I am an informed citizen to be able to confirm the concern raised by this petition is legitimate and has nothing to do with racial profiling. I live in West coast but I want to show my support. I am dismayed by the ignorance of the medical authorities both in Ontario and BC. I keep my fingers crossed for their incompetence would not bring about an epidemic outbreak on us.
