Sam, I have been watching the news. And yeah, I'd agree... You probably shouldn't be think about travelling to China right now. I'll even go further in saying that if you have been to China, not a bad idea to visit a doctor. But that doesn't mean we should start having school boards demand information of families, and start naming individuals who have been to China in the community. Especially since... And man I'm getting tired of saying this... Only three people in Canada have tested positive for Coronavirus

To all those who don’t seem to understand where the racism lies, set aside your fear and think about it. Nobody is calling you a racist for wanting to protect your children. It is the methods and ‘procedures’ that this petition is calling for that is racist. Read the comments carefully, ‘quarantine all Chinese students from our schools’ or ‘close the borders to the Chinese returning from China’, that is what is racist. It’s understandable that you should want to keep your children safe. But it shouldn't be your children only or only those who are ‘healthy’, it should be all children whether they are white, black, asian etc., sick, not sick and presumed to be sick. Think about what this petition is asking for, ‘the school board should monitor, track and name all students coming back from China’. Why? So that those students can be ridiculed, bullied, outcast and avoided by others? I’m sure everyone here knows bullying is already a problem here and all over the world. Children as young as 8 have committed suicide due to bullying. Some here are saying ‘hurt feelings are temporary’, they are not. Racism has been proven to have lasting effects of pain and suffering. If signing this petition makes you feel better than by all means, but keep the racist comments to yourself and stop spreading fear to others, that’s not going to help you get this petition ratified.

For the love of our kids, do the right thing. This deadly virus can be asymptomatic, it is contagious, it is live threatening to kids, teachers and their families. It just takes one relay or two to reach to your breath and then possibly kill you and your love ones in as short as two weeks. It is a fair and strict protocol to all ethnics who just came back from the countries or areas with case confirmed. Nobody told us it would claim 44 lives of Canadians beforehand in 2003 SARS, so why are you waiting to see the Canadian death toll first prior to doing anything to avoid it? When it comes to be healthy or infected in wake of the proven deadly virus, we don't take a chance, why do you? It is a token to promote public health, and many of us are doing it, please don't downplay the risk and take the credit away from prevention measure (especially after it works) !!!

I think quarantine is the necessary thing to do to minimize the spreading of this terrible virus. Political rightness is too unimportant when compared to a disaster if the virus spreads in Canada.

So now you’re a doctor because you read the news? Then it amazes me how you missed all those reports that the flu poses a greater immediate threat to Canadians then the corona virus. Or maybe you just chose to ignore them and just want to spread fear.

Unlike you that just waste your time by insulting concerned citizens, I do study through legit channels such as CBC, WHO, Canada's website, global news, etc. You obviously are not an educated person and know nothing about medicine so good luck!

From the China region? So meaning...Chinese people? So you're saying non-Chinese returning from a trip to China don't need to be isolated? Yeah, that's not racist at all... Agreed. The only thing naming individuals will do is outcast them. I've read multiple comments on here where some parents named a particular child because he is returning from China soon. Now it won't matter if the child is carrying the virus or not, he will automatically be assumed to be. Parents will tell this to their children and he will be bullied, ridiculed, outcast and made fun of. These are things children, teens and even adults commit suicide for. People need to stop feeding the hysteria.

I show my support . I am on the west coast and strongly believe that this should be followed in BC as well . The only way to stop the spread is to isolate it and it’s source . The source carriers are those from the China region . It’s not racism it’s a fact. I am appalled that government continues to downplay this. Look at the facts .. a city ( with the population of Canada) doesn’t go into isolation and complete lockdown and restricts travel for a virus that is common to just a flu. We need to focus on restricting the spread at all costs ( whether it’s trade or travel ) and stop trying to be passive with political correctness. close the borders and contain this virus . Isolate those for 17 days until it’s contained. Better to inconvenience a *few ( since the *Canadian government thinks the risk is soooooo low) then infect millions .

WHO announcement doesn't change the fact that only 3 people in Canada have been infected. Again, only 3 people. Google Classroom isn't a solution for schooling kids can't socialize and curriculums cannot be properly taught. Again... No one in York Region is infected. Zero individuals. There is no reason to panic

2. No one is saying this is comparable to the flu. What I'm saying is that the flu is far worse in Canada right now. There's some logic to what the Chinese are doing, right now, thousands in Wuhan are infected. Only three people in Canada are infected with Coronavirus, and they are quarantined. By comparison, the flu will likely kill 3500 people. As of this moment, that's the bigger medical issue right now, and it doesn't make sense to panic about a virus that has yet spread beyond 3 people when the flu is easily the bigger medical issue in Canada

Sam, I appreciate your engagement here, but I don't think you are fully appreciating what people are objecting to 1. Right now, Coronavirus is present not only in China, but countries like France, Vietnam and the United States. In the former and latter's case, both countries have had human-human transmission. Shouldn't we add similar restrictions to them? Highlighting China is racially biased here... You are assuming everyone from China is at risk, and that simply isn't true.

I'm not sure you've read this petition, this isn't a 'medical procedure, just to make sure kids are safe'. You are asking school officials to monitor and name individuals in the community who've been to China. You are making judgements about people's health, based on their travel itinerary and where they are from... No medical information, no expert opinion. Judging people on that criteria is racist. I'm not here to change people's perspectives on race, I'm here asking people not to listen or do racist things.
