Because I believe Stoa still has Christ centered and humble servant leaders who seek to continue in the spirit of why Stoa was founded including transparency and responsiveness to its members , I vote for this petition. Over a year ago, I had an extensive conversation with one of Stoa's most respected leader. Over some decisions preceding this DUO decision, I expressed significant concerns similar in part to the spirit of what is expressed in this petition. Over the past 12 months, I've heard not a few rumblings that some feel Stoa is beginning to feel a bit more like the league we came out of. Some of these rumblings have come from leaders in the field so I do take them seriously. However, these leaders also do not seem to feel that there is an effective avenue to express their concerns. In leadership, especially for a volunteer organization, process matters. Intensely. Because I do believe that Stoa's leaders desire to remain in the spirit of our founding, I vote here in hopes that there will be a gracious, reasoned and dialogical response to this petition.

A very well written petition, all the reasons of which are true. We humbly ask that you change Duo back to it's original form. Many students who have given up their "free" summer months in preparation for this event will have to start all over again. ~E

I completely agree. Duo thrives on unhindered creative freedom and has a long legacy of being one of the most popular events because of it. This rule change represses the competitor creativity and overall enjoyment of the event.

I know that my students spent the spring preparing a duo, which will no longer be acceptable under the new rules. Also, I agree that the membership would best be served if this significant of a change were presented to the membership for a vote this coming spring.

I appreciate your passion and your approach. I am under the impression that the original rules were the ones that are now slated for 2015-2016 and that last year's rules were different than the original rules. However, I might be thinking back to NCFCA days. Can anyone clarify that for certain?
Now, just to give everyone something to think about, I want to say that we have actually moved away from the original reason why interp was part of speech. The element that made interpretation of literature a speech event was that your introduction made an argument of sorts. The performer(s) would take a stand on the theme of the literature and then their performance would support that stand. Does that make sense? It essentially had an element of argumentation to it and that is what made it part of forensics. Otherwise, it might just as well be in an acting league.

Duo has always held a special place in my heart, as my original duo was the first event I ever broke in. It's a unique and extremely fun experience that I don't want others to miss out on.

I feel you should reconsider this mandatory change in Duo Interpretation in the interest of original work and the democratic process and allow the membership to vote on any changes.

I think that "open" duo greatly diversifies the category, and encourages creativity. In my experience, pieces of literature that were suitable for duo, and had universal appeal were rare, in high demand, and consequently over used.
