We are West Milford parents, students, and community members who express our disappointment and alarm at Dr. Anemone’s September 5 announcement of the suspension of the state mask mandate to start the school year on the basis of “excessive heat". Temperatures are predicted to be in the 70s for the next week, with a high of 80. These conditions do not meet the standard of excessive heat by any standard, state or federal.
For this reason and others, it is clear that Dr. Anemone’s decision is unlawful and directly violates the Governor’s Executive Order and guidance issued by the state Department of Health.
We urge the Superintendent and the members of the Board of Education to immediately change course and bring the district back into compliance with state law.
Until last night’s decision, we had confidence in the leadership and judgment of the Superintendent and the Board of Education. Due to this faith, many of us have avoided attending public Board of Education meetings in the middle of the Covid 19 pandemic, trusting that decisions would always follow the science and the law. That will not be the case anymore. Starting with the September 21st meeting we will attend en masse in order to ensure that the voices of reason and safety are heard in this community.

I have spent hours reading through your stories about the risks our families are facing and your experiences have only deepened my resolve. The administration continues to ignore the facts but we are preparing to bring our concerns directly to the next board meeting.

Maybe if the school fixed the AC and met the state temperature regulations this wouldn’t be an issue. Why does the administration insist on creating a dangerous and unsafe environment for our children? Wear the Mask.
As a local vocal coach for many of the West Milford students, I want them to stay healthy. Our best line of defense is a vaccination if eligible AND a mask. Science is real. Too hot? If the heat is excessive, then parents can assume their children can wear whatever they want to stay cool.
I feel this decision violates the governors mandate and puts my grandson at great risk. It’s time that our school administration acts for the good of all students and not just those with whose parents make their lives uncomfortable
I am frustrated, angry and deeply disappointed that a decision of this magnitude was shared on the Sunday night of a holiday weekend with no time for discourse or discussion before implementation. Such a severe lack of authentic collaboration and community decision making.
The superintendent needs to rescind his order and reinstate the mask mandate. Speaking as a retired NJEA and PCEA member, the safety of our children MUST be a priority. Masking follows the science!!

Changing the rule is unnecessary and dangerous. Avg of 75' is most definitely not excessive heat. Many people, and children have been wearing masks in those temps, and much higher. The law states excessive heat is index of 105. As a parent I am grateful for the forecast for the comfort of the children.
