I have a child who is currently a high school student in a Chesterfield County high school. She must wake at 5:30 AM. I would be very happy to see this change.

My son is a senior and this has been very difficult for him- looking forward to later college classes. However, my next child has just started this process.

Based on the data (and the observations of a mom of 2 who had to be at school at 7am) it only makes sense!

How many focus groups and meetings is it going to take before the Board does what it k owns is right for kids?

I support later start times for high schools. I do not support a later start time for my elementary or middle school.

Sound research indicates that high school students should not be starting school at 7:30 am. And 7:45 is not the answer. I think inertia is in place. People are "used to doing" what they have been doing. If you asked parents in Henrico, where elementary is the earliest and high school is the latest, if they would like to change their schedule, they would give a resounding no. Those parents are perfectly happy with their schedule. So please, Chesterfield, pay attention to the research and let those high school students sleep later at home - rather than catching that extra 20 winks during first period.

As a mother of a 9th grader at Matoaca High school, I agree that the high school students should start school at a later time. Alot of students have after school activities, and jobs. Not to forget homework. They need that extra sleep each morning. Thank you, Tammy Foster.

This petition is NOT advocating flipping the schedule. It is simply asking the School Board to consider the topic again, and consider alternatives that have not been discussed, such as leasing buses, that could enable all students to have reasonable start times. Henrico starts some of it's elementary schools at 7:40, and some at 8:10. Young children get up earlier (biologically). Having them start earlier makes more sense. They should not be in school until 3:45. Many teachers tell us they are falling apart by the end of the day.

If this happens, elementary school will then have to take kids at 7am. What is better? 5-10 year olds going to school at 7am or 16-18? High school needs to remain at 7 since it prepares kids for life since you have to go to work early for many jobs/careers. Check out Henrico county, poor 5 yr olds having to wake up at 5am!!!! Do not sign this!!

I'm definerely in favor of changing high schools' schedule to start school later. Studies show that teenager' internal clock is different and they get more quality of sleep after 10:00 11:00 pm, but a minimum of 8 hours sleep is still recommended.
