Start High School Later in Chesterfield

The School Board said on September 25th that they wanted to delay addressing start times until after dealing with redistricting, which will not be completed until 2019 or 2020, according to the most optimistic estimates. This decision on their part is what motivated this petition. Start times can be changed much sooner than this. Even after redistricting, the same number of students will need to be transported somewhere. Why sacrifice our children's health, safety, and academic outcomes until redistricting is addressed? This petition is playing an important role in letting the School Board know that a lot of parents in the county want this changed now. Thanks for your support and please encourage others to sign. We need to let our elected officials know how much we care about this issue!
P.S.: Here is a link to the article in which the Board proposed delaying this change indefinitely:

I attended many of the community meetings regarding the possible time change. To ignore the research and data is irresponsible. As a high school teacher I can attest to the issues older students face due to lack of sleep.

And delaying only "20 minutes" is NOT enough. Chesterfield county, just once, do something right!

As a clinical psychologist, I think this is an important change for our students' mental health and safety.

Plus, letting elementary student out earlier will allow afternoon naps for those that still need it, and feels trips with the parents to places like Cmor and Maymont, as they had during the preschool years, learning soooo much through the interaction

Teenagers actually require more sleep than younger children - Please allow these kids a chance to start later so they can be more productive with the vigorous schedule that these kids face everyday !

As a developmental psychologist, I find it hard to understand how any school district can justify start times that are known to undermine student health (and learning!). The science is very clear on this, and has been for quite some time.

The evidence for the health benefits of this proposal for students is overwhelming. It would be irresponsible for CCPS to ignore such compelling data.

With a 6th grader in CCPS, I am highly concerned about this topic and am 100% in support of changing the start time for high school students!
