Safer Walking and Biking Routes to Mahtomedi Schools

Add a walking and biking path to the east side of Warner Ave.

Trails and / or sidewalks are needed on all busy roads.

Warner Avenue is the worst.

I highly support safe routes to school for students! It is beneficial for learning and daily activity.

I agree that something needs to be done, but not the timing. I would love to be a bike/walking lane for the kids, there is not enough room or time on Warner road to make changes before school starts. There is not enough room between cars, trucks and commercial vehicles (buses are commercial vehicles). Add in parked vehicles, garbage haulers and trash cans and the road is further clogged. Having kids bike and walk would be very dangerous at this point. If school starts in September, this cannot get planned before then. This should have been worked on in March.

Supervised crossing on Stillwater Road, particularly at Hallam Ave./East Avenue. Apparently the word has not gotten out that you stop at crosswalks when occupied.

We would love to bike to school, the am rush is too dangerous for my 6 year old to bike. There are options that could easily be designated, however may require some very limited parking restrictions (rush hour) to make it safe for kids. Sideways are historically less safe for kids on bikes due to getting run over in driveways and poor visibility. But having safe, marked routes , and an organized crossing across Stillwater and Hallam by the fire station with lights to stop/alert traffic that they need to STOP for pedestrians would be very very helpful.

There are many of us east of the schools and trying to cross Co Rd 12 at Jamaca Ave N is getting harder in a car, let alone a bike or walking.

The area around OHA is long overdue for safely getting kids to school in ways other than driving and busing. I used to bike and walk my kids to school when they attended the old Wildwood and OHA. The narrow curvy streets through Willernie always felt unsafe. And crossing 244 at Ash street was generally taking your life in your hands. I like an earlier commenter’s idea of calling on volunteers to help kids cross major thoroughfares and intersections.

Parents and High schoolers could volunteer to monitor routes. Could be healthy all around.

Safe walking and biking to school is a must for CHILDREN and COMMUNITY!

I would love to see the neighborhood get sidewalks, and more crosswalks. Can the city do it without cutting into private property? Thanks, Sage.

Should have been done many years ago! We’ve heard there will be a sidewalk going in south of OHAnderson School scheduled out for a few years. By then all those kids will be grown and unfortunately not many coming up. It’s time they do it now. Very dangerous with South Warner so narrow with lots of traffic.

Stillwater Rd. Has fast moving traffic without a bike lane. Let’s keep our children safe as they choose a healthy way to go to school.

Sidewalks along the road in front of OHA, specifically, is a must! Though most drivers are cautious when picking up their children at the end of the school day, it is a challenging place for kids to bike and walk, and share the road with drivers. There is just not enough space.

Could we have signs marking "Safe House", should a child need help along the route to school? Also, School Crossing guards with flags would help safety!
