The state finally backed down and rejected the corrupt deal between Southport and Progress Energy. This 65-year tax giveaway is dead because we refused to let them rob the public coffers in the dark. Keep your eyes open because we need to make sure they do not try to sneak …
We the undersigned being citizens of North Carolina object to the purpose of SB 315 which would ratify the agreement between the city of Southport and Progress Energy.
The agreement would provide for an exemption from annexation and property taxation for 65 YEARS.
In light of the fact that the state of North Carolina has within its powers the authority to annex without making monetary concessions to anyone, we feel it is inappropriate for the state to ratify any such agreements.
The bureaucrats at Progress Energy and the city think they can hide this sixty-five year giveaway behind closed doors. I am digging through the legal filings now to expose exactly who stands to profit from this theft of our tax base. They expect us to stay quiet while they lock North Carolina into a multi-decade disaster.

Stop giving special handouts to these big corporations. Southport needs that tax money for real improvements.

The state has the power to just annex it so why are they bending over backwards for progress energy? Makes no sense.

Ridiculous. No company should get a deal like this while the rest of us pay our share every single year. Cut it out.

Fix this before it's too late. Way too long of a timeline to give away.
