We are organizing a petition to demand the immediate release of poet Abdirahman Ibrahim Abees who is imprisoned in Somaliland for a poetry reading. By signing this you are expressing your disagreement of the arrest and demanding his release. Every voice counts!!
Background
On Saturday, 12 January 2019, the government of Somaliland arrested poet Abdirahman Abees, a British-Somalilander dual national.
The arrest of the poet is related to a poetry reading performed by the poet on 11th January 2019 in Hargeisa, according to government authorities who spoke to Human Rights Centre (HRC), and family members.
At a poetry reading event convened at Hargeisa, the poet recited poems talking about “police brutality, “arbitrary detentions” and “poor leadership”.
He is now held in the Hargeisa Central Prison awaiting trial. A request of bail has been denied.

I just looked at the screen and saw 500 names and I honestly had to sit down for a minute because when I started this I was pretty sure it would just be me and maybe my brother. Poetry is supposed to be protected but here we are fighting just to get him out of a cell and somehow all of you showed up to help me try.

I really did not think this would take off like it has when I first started typing this out in a total panic. Seeing all these people show up for Abdirahman makes me feel like maybe things are actually changing and I am just staring at my screen in complete shock right now.

I was just rereading his poems and it is wild how much risk someone takes just for speaking the truth in Hargeisa. Everyone keeps emailing me asking about the trial status but honestly the silence from the authorities is deafening right now.

Every human was born free, unless he or she give up their freedom by committing crime or broken laws that existed. However, Mr. Abees doesn't give up he's freedom either break any law. The somaliland government should release him asap
Hala sii daayo waa muwaadin cabiray dareenkiisa fadlan yaan la takiorin xoriyatul qawlka waa waxaynu siyaad bare iskaga kicinay yeynaan noqonin kuwa ku dhaqma waxay ka dhiidhiyeen goor hore waana astaan muujinaysa in aynu dib usocono hadaynu nahay reer somaliland
waxaan ahay bahda ardeyda qalinlayda ah ee Dugsiga qaanuunka jamacada hargeysa mid kamida waxanan leyay xoriyada walaalkeen in lasoo celiyaa waa xaq distoori ah Hallo soo celiyo xorriyadiisa Abwaan Abees iyo inta la xidhan
Run ahaantii waa dhacdo fool xun hadii wax lagu haysto oo uu qaldanyahay hadalkiisa ayaa laga jawaabi laha lkin in la xidho waxa ay muujinaysa in uu xaq ku socdo we realy need the freedom of speech to be openly recognized in the society
I request for the Court to releise mr Abees, as a constitution of somaliland lay down article 25 (2) no person may be arrested, searched, or detained, except when caugh flagrante delicto, or on issue of a reasoned arrest warrant by a competent cour.
Fadlan muwaadinkan xorriyadiisa siiya, cidda xannibtayna sharciga hor keena. Waa haddii xeer ilaalin caadi ahi jirto, ama ba Dawlad caadi ahi.
Waxaan codsanayaa in xorriyaddiisa loo soo celiyo Abwaanka
