Valentin Gutev was a colleague of mine when I was at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He was a fine academic who had an B1-rating by the National Research Foundation of South Africa (which is high for Mathematics in South Africa). He was also a very good teacher and his students really liked him and his courses.
I strongly support the case of Valentin.

Valentin Gutev is a prominent Bulgarian topologist renown for his fundamental contributions to the theory of continuous selections, an area of general topology pioneered by Ernest Michael and having applications in numerous areas of mathematics. While Professor Gutev published more than 90 research papers, this number alone does not tell the whole story. His articles are usually quite lengthy, dive deeply into the substance of his study, and the results he obtains often offer a complete solution of the problem he chooses to address. In particular, his characterizations of various mathematical phenomena are often of the ``if and only if'' variety, providing both necessary and sufficient conditions.
Velentin Gutev has a strong passion for doing mathematics. I sincerely hope that the University of Malta would reconsider its decision and give Professor Gutev a chance to pass his passion to a younger generation of students. I have no doubts that the mathematical education in Malta would greatly benefit from Professor Gutev's continuing full-time service at his institution.

I fully support the petition and stand by Professor Gutev.
It is very shocking to hear this situation has happened; I hope it is resolved and that the strategies are properly reconsidered so it never happens again.
