It is sad to see that a world-known professor is treated disrespectfully. The faculty members are the most valuable asset of any university – they are those who attract students and contribute to the university ratings. I hope that the University of Malta will take into account this fact in Prof. Gutev’s case. Reneta Barneva, Professor, USA

Professor Valentin Gutev is a World wide know mathematician, pretty active in his research, with almost one hundred of published works. It is a shame for the University of Malta to scale down his position to the lowest possible level of a resident academic.

Professor Valentin Gutev is an excellent mathematician with extraordinary results in the field of General Topology. I think that authorities of the University of Malta have to give him a chance to continue his normal academic life. Georgi Dimov, Professor of Mathematics (Topology) (retired), Dr. Habil., Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" , Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia, Bulgaria

Professor Gutev gives international visibility to mathematics in Malta. It would be a shame to lose such a person.

Academia without integrity of academics and academic bodies can not exist. High achieving academics are not.onky a decorum bringing international visibility. They are also role models for their students.

I know Professor Valentin Gutev since forty years, when he was a student at Sofia University. Then I was impressed by his extraordinary passion for Mathematics and more specifically, for Topology and Set Theory. His achievements in the field of Topology over the years are even more striking. I believe this was the reason why University of Malta assigned him a full-time position as a professor at the Department of Mathematics ten years ago. Then he left a similar position at the University of Durban, South Africa and moved, with his family, to Malta. In these ten years his passionate work did not diminish, this can be easily checked. This is why I am shocked, to say the least, to hear that the extension of his full-time employment was refused. I hope that authorities of the University of Malta will reconsider this decision giving Professor Gutev a chance to continue his normal academic life. Dikran Dikranjan, Professor Emeritus, Udine University, Department of Mathematics, Computers Science and Physics, via della Scienze 206, Udine 33100, Italy
