Solidarity with Peter Mayo

A University is not an organisation whose result is measured on a single bottom line and that, therefore, can be strictly managed. Academics of the calibre of Professor Mayo are not ten a penny. This is a suicidal action, the University of Malta will not only suffer an irreparable damage of its reputation, it is already brought into disrepute.

Só demonstra que a crise na educação é generalizada, sistêmica e que repudiar tais atitudes é um dos recursos que nós professores temos, para lutar contra esse sistema de clientelismo político sujo que permeia as universidades. Impedir de forma obscura o trabalho de Peter Mayo, é prova cabal, de a corrupção se instalou nas universidades.

Peter Mayo’s work is used around the world and I’m shocked to hear of this. I benefited from his exceptional output as a graduate student, and use his work when teaching at the university — McGill University and University of Toronto.

The European Union is placing emphasis on the need for people to work beyond the pensionable age. To me this seems that Malta is intent on not respecting this policy. Yes, it does seem that there might be hidden agendas. Unfortunately, this might not be the case here. Hidden agendas credits politicians with some degree of intelligence. I think that this likely smacks of a systemic maintaining of the status quo perhaps due to a lack of vision; an indicator of ineffectiveness. I, a colleague of Professor Peter Mayo, urge Professor Alfred Vella to recognise that this is no way to treat an academic today, and especially in the light of broader international trends regarding employment. Peter Mayo is simply one of the major scholars of critical pedagogy in the world and hands down a major asset to the University of Malta (or any other institution that he would support). Dr. Mayo has a stellar reputation and has contributed significantly to the field of adult education. The University of Malta should be proud to have a scholar with his level of global recognition as a contributing member of their faculty.

Outrageous behaviour. Peter is an acclaimed academic in his field. The University of Malta should be honoured to have him as a member of their staff.

Injustices anywhere are to be challenged. Universities play essential roles in society and Dr. Mayo is a lead voice and must be re-instated. His role is: To critically reflect on and challenge injustice, oppression, and disempowerment; To willingly engage in stellar and risky, creative communications; To boldly put forward a compelling, loving vision; To effectively mobilize around innovative, collaborative strategies that include diverse views; To widely share success and promote progress. I have known Peter Mayo since were both PhD students at the same institution. Dr Mayo is an exceptional scholar and he has been celebrated in many international institutional ways. I hope that his own institution treats him well.

As one of his overseas doctoral students, I'm astonished by this not giustfied treatment.
