I strongly advise those who have decided to withdraw Prof. Mayo's position from the University of Malta to listen to one of his lectures and then revise their position.

The U of M individuals who have reached this unjust decision to deny Peter Mayo an extension should be queried and given an opportunity to revisit this unwarranted ruling.

Assessment of academic performance needs to take all duties, with due weighting, into consideration, not mainly teaching. The distribution of teaching assignments depends on the decisions of the administration within a faculty. It is unacceptable that a HoD within a faculty decides to reduce the teaching load of academics requiring annual endorsement to retain their position placing them in a precarious situation.

Prof. Mayo has been doing original work in eduction theory. It is recognized internationally. What is involved here beyond the university's decision in his case is a lurking concern that the university is not as good as before and maybe can fall into red scares made to look like reasoned decision-making based on teaching evaluations. I hope I am wrong!

The UM only stands to benefit from allowing Professor Mayo to continue to contribute fully to his specialized area of expertise, with his evident skills in the development of whole programmes of study, and his additional aptitude in organising and overseeing such collaborations as that between our educational institution and Unesco. I humbly ask all involved not to reduce such a professorial stature to teaching elements alone, and also humbly point out that scholarly publications such as Professor Mayo's are in themselves an undisputed form of delivery and teaching. The unanimous recommendation of his Faculty, as stated by himself, speaks for itself.
