We the undersigned social work educators, professionals and concerned citizens, lament the absence of a statutory or even recommended staff/student ratio for social work training. We note that recommended staff/student ratios are seen as key to successful professional education in related disciplines such as clinical psychology , nursing and the allied health professions. We call on the Secretary of State and on the General Social Care Council to set and disseminate a recommendation in this respect to put social work training on the same footing as related disciplines.

The feedback from educators across the country confirms that crumbling staff ratios are undermining the quality of our training programs. I am drafting a formal brief for the General Social Care Council to highlight these specific failures. Send a quick email to your regional representative today and demand they push for public standards in social work education.

The momentum behind this push for standard ratios confirms that we are hitting a nerve across the entire profession. Now is the time to turn this energy into direct action by emailing your local representative to demand they raise this with the Secretary of State.

Social workers have enough pressure without being trained in overcrowded classrooms. Limits are needed now.

Ridiculous that nursing and psych get specific ratios but social work is just left to fend for itself. Sort this out.

How can we expect these students to be properly prepared when class sizes are this huge. It is setting them up to fail and the people they are meant to help will pay the price.
