I join with other social workers to demand that NASW issue an urgent call to defund police as a means of combating white supremacy and supporting Black communities. Reforms that fall short of calling for an end to policing and reinvestment in community safety and well-being fail to meet the standards set out in the Code of Ethics since policing has been shown to be an institution that is antithetical to the life and well being of black Americans. In American society, police serve the primary function of maintaining the social order, particularly white supremacy. As such, social workers must call for abolition of policing in accordance with the principles and standards set forth in our profession’s Code of Ethics.

The political economy is in such a unique position for complete systemic change and I am shocked and disappointed that the NASW does not recognize that we can do so much better than this executive order. We are failing our ethical values if we are not pushing for real systemic change.

This is against everything social work stands for. Defund the police and did the those funds to programs that actually support oppressed communities. I’m disappointed in the NASW.

I have been practicing social work for 9 years, and have witnessed the rippling effects that the violence of incarceration as a result of racist, classist, homophobic, transphobic policing practices Has Wright not only on the people I serve, but their families, and our community at large. Punitive action does not change behavior. Community led and developed services oriented towards education, job preparedness, affordable housing, and conflict deescalation do. Please define the police and invest in our communities!!

As social workers it is critical that we center the leadership of the Movement for Black Lives. The call to Defund the Police is a call to abolish the racist institutions of policing and incarceration which work hand-in-hand to continually protect and reinforce white supremacy. The Executive Order on Safe Policing for Safe Communities is in direct opposition to these demands and the amazing organizing and movement-building supporting those demands.
