NASW--as social workers, we were taught to listen to the needs and demands of individuals and communities before assuming what they need. Communities effected by police brutality are demanding defunding of police departments, and investing that money directly into communities (affordable housing, community centers, etc). Resources and equity needs to be redistributed. It is absolutely appalling that you would even consider letting social workers be an instrument for upholding a racist institution and getting in the way of true progress.

Social workers should not be complicit in maintaining the racist, violent system of policing. Social work as a profession has a messy history of both fighting for justice and enabling injustice. Right now is the time to boldly fight for justice an be dismantle these carceral systems that history has shown are beyond reform. Defund police and support the work communities already do to keep safe and thrive.

Social workers should be working on dismantling white supremacy and racist oppression, not contributing to it by policing people and applauding ineffective measures to rein in police brutality. NASW, where are your social work ethics?!

The EO goes against our very code of ethics and responsibilities as social workers. Social workers should be actively severing ties with and calling for abolition of the POLICE, ACS, FOSTER CARE, and ICE. We will not be complicit in these systems that work to oppress, stigmatize, and dehumanize communities of color.

LSW in Colorado - I don’t stand in support of President trumps proposal on “safe policing”. I feel this is a bandaid and as a social worker I’m not interested in covering up racist systems and protecting the status quo
