Social Workers in Solidarity Against Safe Policing for Safe Communities Executive Order

I am a social worker and we need to stand with black folks and against the police.

Social workers must involved in efforts around community-led safety, but we will not end police violence within the same system that has perpetuated it for hundreds of years.

We need to do better.

This police system as it exists (and has always existed) cannot be reformed, and social workers who actually care about social justice do not want to be a pawn in this sham of a reformation. NASW needs to lead the charge in defunding our current policing system and replacing it with something that actually values human life and upholds our professional ethics.

Aligning social work and the NASW with the work of this current presidential administration is to say we no longer uphold or abide by our own code of ethics and continue to ignore the long history and legacy of social work’s harm within/to marginalized communities. I do no support, agree with or stand for the NASW’s recent comments.

Provide Retrain, provide assessments, and ongoing counseling to police

As a current social work student, as a Black Indigenous future social worker, I know Social Work as a whole must be reimagined to DO NO HARM, VALUE HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS, VALUE AGENCY AND HUMAN RIGHTS. We cannot act in ways that are policing to communities that have been marginalized and criminalized through the legal system and SOCIAL WELFARE systems we uphold.

Working with police as a social worker sounds nice, but that culture of policing will always overpower our attempts to carry out our social work values.

This executive order does not represent social workers in this country. Please rescind support for it and show all social workers are committed to ending racial inequality and standing in solidarity with black lives.

Social workers against this

As a recent graduate of Portland State University’s MSW program I am appalled by the NASW’s decision to support the recent executive order of the current administration. The NASW should be committed to dismantling the inherently racist police system in support of black loves matter and in an effort to end white supremacy.

There is no safe policing. Support abolishing the police; everything else is anti-black.

Studying Social Work at George Mason University and I am ready to fight.

I am not in support of this initiative. I believe the current system of policing is supporting white supremacy and strongly discourage the NASW from supporting this policy.

I expect better from the NASW.

I stand in support of wanting poliece to be trained on how to de-escalate situations in a non-violent manner. And if certain COPs are not able to follow said trainings, that they be fired, and/or dealt with in a judicial manner.

To support policing in any shape or form is not in alignment with social workers code of ethics

While I think Social Workers are necessary to be catalysts for change, Trumps proposal was not well thought out, nor could it be implemented successfully. The systemic racism would still be prevalent; adding Social Workers would only be a bandaid on a deep flesh wound.
