social workers do not belong in law enforcement, which actively brutalizes people of color and despite calls to reform should be defunded. social workers should not be used as tools to uphold white supremacy.

As a Black woman, a Social Worker, a Community Member, and a strong believer in standing against social injustice,I stand boldly and firmly against this pseudo-helping hands relationship that NASW has established in support of the president and in neglect and opposition of communities and people we have vowed to protect and give voice. Policing communities not only goes against the code of ethics of social work, but it dishonors humanity and freedom. THIS is NOT what we do!!!

I joined this field because of the fierce dedication to social justice, and I’m deeply disappointed in the stance taken by NASW. Social Workers will continue to find for equity, with or without a retraction of your misguided memo.

As someone who just finished my social work program and is firmly rooted within the practices of anti-oppressive social work as well as someone who grew up in state foster care, I find it appalling that the NASW could continue to support state violence and oppression. We know who is targeted by our criminal punishment system, who is more likely to die at the hands of police, and which communities do not trust the police out of fear for their lives. This is absolutely unacceptable. It is time for Social Work as a profession to stop working to uphold the tenets of white supremacist oppression and other forms of oppression.

I am a macro social worker who understands the implications that policing as on a person’s and a community’s mental health and overall wellbeing. There is no such thing as “safe policing” especially as it relates to social work. There is no dignity or humanity in policing.

Social workers are historically undervalued, but are integral to bridging gaps between authority figures and marginalized communities. Their job is not to uphold racist systems, but to be a channel through which we can break them down. Denounce this action.
