Currently at Ann Sobrato High School, there is no policy preventing teachers and administrators from dress coding students during class time. Teachers and other staff members/admin often send students out of class during learning and instruction time to the front office to change out of their "unacceptable" clothing. Little do they realize that actions such as these are causing more bad than good in the long run.

If the whole point of dress code is to eliminate distractions, why are teachers and staff allowed to interrupt students' class time to send them to the office to change into a different shirt/outfit? This not only gives the "out of dress code" attire more attention, but it ultimately wastes class time for both the student in question and their peers.

By signing this petition, you are agreeing that ASHS should add a policy stating the following:

Teachers and staff members at Ann Sobrato High School are prohibited from dress coding any student during class time, as it wastes time, draws more attention to the inappropriate attire, and causes a greater distraction than the out of dress code clothing.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many of you feel the same way about our classroom time. This momentum really belongs to all of you who decided that our education should come before everything else.

Dress codes only apply to females basically. Why should we cover ourselves up because boys can't control themselves? It's ridiculous and it's degrading. Shoulders aren't distracting, thighs aren't distracting, arms aren't distracting. All of the parts that we have to cover up aren't distracting and if you are so distracted by them you have a problem and maybe you should go home. Our learning shouldn't be impacted by our clothes and I shouldn't be taken out of class because you can't focus.

I believe that schools shouldn't have separate dress codes for male and female students but instead one single set of dress codes that affects every student to assure that sexism doesn't take place and that all genders are treated equally when it comes to clothing, then again a majority of the students do not know what the actual dress code prohibits and allows (myself for example)

Another point you can bring up is that institutions of higher education like universities don't have dress code policies at all, but students still are able to learn and aren't distracted by the clothing of their peers. Good luck!

As a parent I firmly believe in having a reasonable dress code policy however I have never agreed with calling the student on a violation in front of other students nor interrupting instruction of said student and their peers. This interruption is not isolated to the amount of time it takes to send the student to the office but it can take additional time to get the other students back into the flow of the class time. The violation would be better addressed in between classes or after school. I think this is a reasonable request to the change in policy and will ultimately benefit everyone with less interruption.

Absolutely ridiculous!!! Shouldn't we be concerned about students' health?!
