I do not think the quarter system is the answer. The entire debate about credit/no credit was that it would be the fairest solution to those students who had issues learning from home. How would a learning environment twice as fast, with guaranteed distance learning, help those students? NOW the assumption is we can all learn at an accelerated pace. Seems hypocritical.

It seems to add frantic-ness to an already fraught situation.

I strongly oppose the quarter system. Too much pressure on kids and the lengthy period of time between Q1 classes and next semester is too long, creating a continuity issue.

Our kids are already struggling they don’t need to feel like the school the love so much is now completely different. They have enough pressure

Please listen to students & parents who spoke clearly in your survey: The vast majority want to return to school. Test, contact trace & follow safety guidelines. We are opposed to the quarter system & the current plan that is suggested. Please keep trying for a better solution for students & staff.

No - for quarter system. This will put way too much pressure on kids.

I do not support the proposal to move to quarters. This structure will shortchange our students' learning experience. I feel that this propsal likely serves other important interests, but does not serve the most important interest: Our childrens' educational needs. /s/ Matthew Gloss

I do not support the Quarter system for all the issues pointed out in the petition. I support Option 4 "Daily Block Schedule 1-7 period". If operating Option 4 is deemed too unsafe, then we should stay with the online learning (synchronous learning 1-7) period) for fall semester 2020.

As a student, I think that the quarter system proposal would be detrimental to my learning. I am a rising junior who is planning to take 2 APs, as well as multiple electives. The electives I have signed up for correlate with what I want to study in college and pursue as a career. The way that this proposal handles electives would make it impossible for me to learn what I need from these classes. I also feel as though I would be completely unprepared for AP testing, like the PTO mentions.

Very concerned about this change and the negative impacts on our children’s education.

I strongly oppose the quarter system schedule. The change is massive, unnecessary, untested, and unproven. Our kids’ lives have already been jarred by the massive change in life style this pandemic has caused, and implementing this new quarter system would be another disruption to whatever sense of normalcy they’ve been able to preserve. There are better options out there: Option 4, the SMHS Parent Proposal, has none of the disadvantages of the quarter system, while at the same time implementing the health guidelines.

I strongly feel that the quarter system will lead to less learning rather than more. My class uses a lot of group work. The irony of this whole situation is that I can do more group work with online synchronous learning than I can with kids in the classroom 6 feet apart. I would advocate for a schedule which brings back ELD, SPED and students who are failing or not joining online classes. Let's keep the rest remote for now with students coming in for a week or two in the beginning, middle and end.

This is honestly one of the most silly ideas that San Mateo Union High School District has ever come up with, and there was potential scholarship money that was used to by little pouches for phones.

The acceleration and compression of 3 semester classes is way too much. Think of the homework time needed. There would be zero time for any extracurriculars. The AP learning would not be in sync either.

I strongly oppose the implementation of the quarter system for the reasons described in the petition. This will cause enormous stress to the students, teachers and families alike.

The quarter system as proposed will create an extremely difficult learning environment for our many diverse students
