EVERY major university has a "campus cats" program; look it up! Managed feral colonies bring many benefits to a campus.

I reside at 4019 University and my wife and I have cared for a feral cat colony in our neighborhood for over 15 years. I'm sorry to hear about your flea problem but there are surely reasonable options other than the one that it appears you have chosen.

These cats provide great sexual joy and removing them would be a sin. Every Friday I apply a generous amount of peanut butter and cat nip to my taint and butthole area and allow the feral cats to lick it off. Their slightly coarse tongue going across my undercarriage doses things sexually that Christy Mack could only with she could perform.

These feral cats gave SMU a unique and humane charm. On late strolls through campus, they provided an extra warmth that got me through tough nights. Please, treat these animals that give our campus character humanely. With the care that volunteers have lovingly given them!

As a Dallas native and (former) SMU supporter I find this behavior atrocious and believe it falls into the animal cruelty column.
There should be a sit down and a dialogue between SMU and the feral cat experts. This can be EASILY resolved the right way - the compassionate and morally correct way.

The community pets are the problem. It's fincky owners that can't keep their own pets maintained. Be positive for the community and harmless, homeless cats.

Save the cats! They are part of the university. Just the idea of shooting domesticated animals is blatant animal cruelty.

You are not solving a flea problem by getting rid of cats. You have made an uninformed and reactive decision that will not provide the solution you desire. Experience shows that the removal of feral cats simply creates a space where more ferals come. Instead of soayed/neutered cats, you will get to start TNR all over again.
In addition, SMU "Emergency" Operations, you've behaved irresponsibly by failing to work with and notify the volunteers. Finally, if you did in fact trap cats in August temperatures in Texas, you set yourself up for animal cruelty charges. You need to research that very well.
Despite requests on your Facebook page for clarity around the discrepancy between your statement and the photographed traps and missing supplies, you have not honored those requests and shown disregard for your human community as well.
Please re-evaluate your actions, step back, and decide on a reasoned and humane approach, should action even be necessary.
In the meantime, please remove your web page that brags about how you handle the feral cat community.

This is appalling. Does SMU always choose to throw the baby out with the bath water?
Their painfully ignorant decision leads me to question what the 'real' reason is behind such extreme measures. I would like to believe that at home they would not get rid of a family pet simply because it has fleas, but that is precisely what they have done here with the SMU cats.
For shame SMU. I expected MORE.
