There is no "humane" way to kill any animal when they are no threat to humans. Fleas are not a threat, they are a controllable inconvenience.

I'm retired from the animal welfare field with 25 years of service. I've practiced TNR and from experience know it works. SMU is more progressive than this and is clearly listening to the wrong voices.

The EOC and SMU need to be better educated before they make decisions. This leaves a black mark on SMU in general.

As a member of the Dallas community and incoming SMU freshman, I resent the idea of being part of a community who would act so inhumane and rash. All life matters and there are plenty of less extreme solutions to this problem. I'd much rather attend a university with cats with some fleas than one with a reputation for sacrificing 45 lives to save face.

Ridiculous to blame cats for fleas. Bet they keep the rodents down that also carry fleas. Terminix has solutions for flea control on grass and outdoor areas. If these cats are maintained and spayed by the feral cat group - why ?

There are plenty of remedies for fleas. I'm sure the community would be happy to contribute towards a flea medication that is easily given in the cats' food. I somehow suspect the flea problem isn't the true issue.

Fleas are there whether there are cats or not. The cats host the fleas and can be easily treated. And the cost is very reasonable. Why not after 10 yrs go the reasonable and humane way.

Please stop the trapping. Spay neuter is the only answer in controlling the feral cat population. And the fleas are going to be there long after the cats are gone.
Kill the fleas, not the cats.
