This is a great opportunity for SMU to demonstrate it's capacity for dialogue with the community and it's ability to innovate in solutions to a common urban issue.

Do not let your actionsto get rid of these cats ensure that everyone will see your inhumanity and stupidity. You have been on the forefront for years. Continue that and do the right thing for a change.

This program has been going on for years and has been well managed and good for the students and the cats. Please stop these barbaric measures now and leave the feral cat program alone.

As an SMU alum and former feral cat program volunteer, I am disgusted at this turn of events. SMU should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. The treatment the cats are receiving is NOT in concert with the values I learned at SMU, nor with the values of the Methodist Church. Our feral program has been a regional model of excellence. To shut it down with no warning and to inhumanely trap and relocate campus cats in 100+ degree weather is the height of dishonestly and cruelty.

When I was a student I loved that there was a feral cat program. It's a cool thing about SMU and shows a softer side to a school that, in my opinion, has become too growth and business-oriented. Getting rid of the cat program or the cats would be a stupid decision, and not just because it won't actually solve either a cat or a flea problem! Save the cats!!

A well-managed feral cat colony keeps the rodent population under control, and research shows that removal of feral cats will leave a vacuum for other cats to move in. Those other cats may not be sterilized and the cat population will grow beyond the resources available to it. Please do not end the program managing this colony, as it will most likely have unintended consequences.

What about all the rats and mice these cats kill! They carry the dangerous fleas. And why do it now; wait until it is cooler

Well,when the mice population increases you'll want the cats back. Cats aren't the only animals that carry fleas. Squirrels, mice/rats, opossums,dogs are you going to eradicate them? Volunteers stated they could treat the cats, let them, they could probably get a company Pfizer, Merck Novartis etc to donate flea prevention.

You are inhumane doing this to the feral cats. There is a better and easier way to help with the flea problems. Ask for help from Feral Friends Pet Rescue here in Dallas.

It is inconceivable that the university would take such an uninformed, drastic, barbaric, unilateral action and do so with such a lack of transparency. The way in which the action was taken suggests that the perpetrators were aware that what they were doing would meet with opposition and that they were uninterested in considering alternatives. For shame!

I am an SMU alum and consider the notion of shooting cats rather than spraying for fleas an ugly mark on my alma mater.
