Keep the Cats at SMU - Save the Feral Cat Program at Southern Methodist University

Stop this inhumane action! "FLEAS" are just an excuse used by some cat haters. This program is an example of compassion and caring and SMU should be proud to embrace it.

Yes, let's actually try to be "World-Changers".

Please keep the cats at SMU. The cats will eventually die off themselves. But without them you will begin to have a rodent & other critter problem. Those creatures carry fleas too, in case you didn't know.

This is a classic example of the Texas mentality.

Please continue the program!

Frankly, I cannot imagine the incredible short-sightedness in this day and age of such a decision by SMU. I am ashamed of you people.

My hope is that SMU will see that shutting out the SMU Feral Cat Group is not the right decision.

Fleas are everywhere this wet year. They're not caused by a few feral cats. I'm afraid that is just an excuse!

The weather here in Dallas contributes to the flea issue. Even well-kept house cats can get fleas down here if they don't use flea treatments in University Park/Dallas. Rather than blame the feral cats for the fleas on campus and decide to remove the cats, perhaps work with the Fersl Cat Program volunteers to come up with a treatment plan (include other necessary shots once a year too maybe)? Do you trap and remove any students that cause the dorms or classroom buildings to get cockroaches, etc?

Feral colony management works, in part because the humans involved communicate and work together to maintain colony health and welfare. Humane solutions exist, and working with the volunteers would go much farther to protect the university's reputation.

Tell the ground keepers to spray cedarcide...a natural flea repellent...to control fleas...also use cedar mulch... fleas (as well as other insects like termites) don't like cedar...I've used it for years w/ great success...it can also be sprayed on dogs/cats (diluted w/ water) for flea control. Remember when we all had a cedar chest ? or a cedar closet ? I'll bet they could even ask for donations to help pay for the cedarcide if SMU says it's not in their budget...I imagine the COST to hire Terminex outweighs the cost of Cedarcide (they are based in Houston)

please work with the feral cat folks on this issue and so the right and humane thing for these cats. Let them stay where they are!!

Things must be mighty slow at SMU to have EMERGENCY OPERATIONS handling a flea problem. This is an institute of higher learning and they counsel buckshot in the head for community cats??!! This will be going out to my SMU friends. I have a feeling alumni wouldn't support this kind of brutal response to fleas. BTW Fleas have been everywhere, including places without ferals. Think you might try flea control before you bring in the bazookas for the cats?

I am an SMU alum. I have no complains about the quality of the education I received there. I have, however, been ashamed on numerous occasions by decisions taken by the university's management. When people ask me about SMU, I give them both sides of the story. News like this reflects poorly on SMU as an institution. A university of this caliber should not do this to itself.
