After more than 18 years in business, SMOQUE has grown from a small neighborhood joint into one of the most respected names in barbecue — thanks to thousands of hours of hard work and the overwhelming support of our community.
Recently, Weber-Stephen Products — makers of Weber grills — launched a pellet smoker under the name WEBER SMOQUE, incorporating our long-established and federally registered trademark: SMOQUE.
To be clear: we have no affiliation with Weber or its products.
We tried to appeal to them directly. When that failed, we filed a Notice of Opposition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect our name and prevent confusion. It’s a long and costly process, but we felt it was important to have our voice on the record.
We’ve always held Weber in high regard — we even felt a certain kinship as two Chicago-based BBQ names. That makes this all the more disappointing. Our name matters — to us, and to the customers who helped us build it.

Smoque is an institution in Chicago. While I am a huge fan of Weber Grills, it’s time for Weber to go back to the drawing board on this product name. Great local companies should respect each other especially as Illinois is under attack from others in this country.
I've known about Smoque for 7 years. I had never heard of the Weber Smoque before encountering an article on it, but if encountered organically I would assume that the two were somehow related as this restaurant is the only place I've encountered the name before.
Smoque was my introduction to great BBQ. It made such an impression that shortly after trying it I bought a Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker and got to work learning how to make BBQ like that. I'm sorry to see Weber take the low road here. I thought they were better than that.
I work in media in downtown Chicago and I’ve ordered Smoque catering for client meetings and appreciation lunches for nearly 15 years! This restaurant is also a family favorite. We celebrate every Father’s Day at Smoque and we live in Flossmoor, IL.
Love Smoque BBQ; have always had a positive view of Weber. The respectful & humble approach of Smoque BBQ on this matter, makes me proud to be a customer with them. Weber, please reconsider the new product name, in comradery with a fellow Chicago BBQ legend.

The trademark infringement is appalling. Smoque BBQ should not have to pay a penny to preserve its right against the far larger Weber-Stephen Products Weber Smoque. We stop in at Smoque whenever we are in the area. It's a solid business.
