As a teacher at Tufts, I've enjoyed & benefitted from having SMFA students in my courses over the years. Seems like a good idea to encourage more of that.

Primary SMFA students get the short of the stick, especially if we are the ones that entered during the first year of the transition. I know that SMFA and Tufts have collaborated together as much as they can to ensure prosperous changes for the students. However, one of the main reasons I applied to SMFA/Tufts is because of the academic and artistic blend, but students are limited at the SMFA compared to their Tufts counterparts who can major and minor in various subjects. A lot of students in their junior and senior year have their own studio spaces or enlist in a program called senior thesis where there's an academic research component to the class. Then, based on their research, the artist will convey what they have learned into their art. Artists are willing to put the extra work and research to enrich themselves and their art. It would be beneficial for them to also get a formal education on material they are interested in which will help propel them. The second wave of SMFA students had to apply to the school with Tufts requirements and expectations in addition to an art portfolio supplement. Furthermore, they now pay Tufts tuition. Please allow them to receive the experience and education that they've paid for and been promised. They're are lot of bright students at the SMFA that don't want to be streamlined into one thing and are more than willing to put rigorous effort into their academics. SMFA students have shown that they can handle the work and commitment to both schools. Tufts talks a lot about community, please allow us to be truly apart of both schools if that's true.

Students should be able to avail themselves of all the resources an institution has to offer. This chiefly includes recognition for work done during their time at said institution. There is no reason a SMFA student should be penalized a minor degree simply because they attend a satellite school rather than the main body of Tufts University.
In short, I want the minor I have earned!

don't buy an arts school under your name and then treat its students like their not part of your university.
