South Hitchin 20mph Zone

Please introduce a 20 mph speed limit in these areas. Many people, including families with young children use these roads, which need to be made safer.

The roads in this area are with a few exceptions unsuitable for through traffic especially teavelling at thirty miles an hour. Access only should be provided for especially in the vicinity of schools shops and other facilities.

Feels like 20 is really the new 30 :)

There are so many children walking to school and playing in these residential streets it is a MUST to slow the traffic down

All residential roads should be 20 mph. There is no justification for going faster than that where people live, not least to reduce pollution.

As a local resident i worry about the excessive speed of drivers who use our local streets as ‘rat runs’ and or due to Google maps! An accident waiting to happen for children, pets or our elderly community

People are driving way too fast along Chiltern Road and The Avenue as they cut through. 20mph is a good idea

The Avenue like a racing track!

The Avenue is now a shortcut from the bumps in Highbury Road. Cars travel down at very high speed, usually early morning and afternoon. We have had two cats killed by speeding cars and it is only a matter of time before a child gets hit. Yes please 20mph plus some speed bumps please. Councillors, please make this happen soon.

Slowing the traffic is a great idea. I agree the bumps up Highbury Road divert the traffic to Chiltern Road and The Avenue as an alternative cut-through.

Don’t agree that 20 mph is the solution. This problem has grown since bumps were installed in Highbury Road and Whitehall Road, the latter originally being the main thoroughfare to the town centre and nowadays eerily quiet whilst the much narrower Chiltern Road and The Avenue get all the traffic - and no doubt Oakfield Avenue can be added to this list too. A scheme to take through traffic off these roads would be much more effective. One was proposed some years ago involving “no right turn” into Chiltern Road and The Avenue from Wymondley Road, and no left turn into The Avenue from Highbury Road, however this never took off. I don’t see the value in a 20 limit when people don’t observe the existing 30.

Since the local council decided to put in speed ramps in and around Chiltern Road and the Avenue, more cars are using these two roads to avoid the speed ramps, and doing speeds well over the built up speed limit.

My cat was run over and killed by a speeding car on Chiltern Road - next time it might be a child.

It’s often the same cars accelerating at the top of the avenue, we can report them to the police and ask for action, it strengthens the case.

Drivers speed in Chiltern Road because they think they can save a few seconds compared to using the more congested Avenue. There will be an accident soon if the traffic is not slowed down.

We live on Benslow Lane and have young children (6 and 4). Because the road is double parked, it’s necessary to step into the road between the cars to look to cross. When holding hands with young children it’s hard to do this safely when cars drive very fast up or down the hill. Please introduce a 20mph zone to at least get drivers to drive at 30 and make this dangerous road slightly safer for children living on it.
