Despite the fact that majority of our senior class is African American, our principal said we can not sing the Black Anthem at our graduation. Our class sponsor said “that song is only sung for black history month”. There will be a Latin speech spoken at graduation, which is pointless because Latin is not even spoken in our country. Finally, the principal’s reasoning for denying the anthem was “we need a song that represents ALL of our students”, but when has the United States ever been considered the “Land of the Free” for African Americans.

I have been reading your stories about how school traditions often exclude our history and it hurts to see so many of you facing the same dismissive attitudes. We are working on a formal rebuttal to present to the administration because our graduation should reflect the actual people walking across that stage.

Seeing this level of support reminds me that we deserve to be recognized on our own graduation stage. Reading your comments gives me the strength to keep pushing against the administration until they finally listen.

As a girls high girl I feel as though this is weird because they make up sing the national anthem at EVERY assembly we have but we as to sing lift every voice and sing one time it’s a problem why should we only acknowledge our anthem one month out of the whole year like they weird

When i was in school the did both to make sure they exercised the diversity they spoke about. I say the entire class should learn the words and sing it anyway along with their anthem. How disrespectful to disregard a song whose country was built on the blood sweat and tears of these people!!!

As an alumni of GHS, I feel like my fellow sister should be able to sing Lift Every Voice at graduation. They say that they want every race to be represented but yet you waste a good amount of time at graduation on a Latin speech in which majority of the class or audience understands. Majority of GHS is African American so why can’t the African American representation be Lift Every Voice? And to Mr. Marchetti to say that the anthem is only sung during black history month, is plain ignorance!

Dr. Moore is really bugging. This isn't even fair. Why do we have to hide the fact that we are black and proud?

As an alum of Girls High, I feel very disappointed in Dr. Moore & Mr. Marchetti! Dr. Moore say it cannot be sung because it does not honor all students but want them to sing the National Anthem in honor of a country who does not care about us, but the Black National Anthem cannot be sung? For anyone to say the song is only for Black History month is a disgrace, and shows how black people are valued! Why do we only get a month to sing our National Anthem, to honor ourselves? Yet you’re wasting time during the graduation for a Latin speech that no one will understand nor listen to. I am disgusted, and feel that my fellow sisters should be able to sing the Black National Anthem at THEIR graduation!

This is sad that a petition has to be made to try to prove the innocence of this song this song should be a given/an honor to sing it’s not just apart of African american culture but it is apart of everyone’s
