Talk about waste and mismanagement of funds, how can the state park justify a 60,000.00 Ford rapptureplus all of the upgrades they've done to it! Its ridiculous, we all need to pull together and stop this kind of stuff from happening! We will not be using the dunes at all this year if this passes, we urge everyone to do the same. I would even spend my holiday weekends picketing the line to the dunes with as much media coverage as possible. Let's let tax payers see how our state parks are wasting our money and taking away just one more thing us middle class people can afford to do. Shame, shame on all of you!

I agree Devin. The residence (which by the way I am NOT one) should at least get a discount or free park access or something. But that's been an argument by the residence going back to the early days of SLSD. And sadly it probably won't ever happen.

“The money [generated by the new voucher fee], potentially over $1,000,000 this summer alone, will not go for improvements to Silver Lake or any other state park,” Bill Loomis said. “It will be used to pay an outside company to run the (voucher) system. That company is not in Michigan — it’s not even in the U.S.” ....[Its based out of Canada] - Bill Loomis Quote found in the Oceana County Press in an article by Allison Scarbrough. OCP Editor.

A Perspective from another angle….the County:
The State gets the revenue generated from ORV and Trail Permit requirements and NOW a possible new $10 on-line voucher fee. It sounds like Oceana County is in the shadows pushing the new Voucher fee to reduce usage since they make no direct revenue from the dunes. (Correct me where I am wrong in assuming the County makes no money from the dunes directly).
Is the County Sheriff's Office trying to make things easier on themselves to help their strained budget? That is to say...if the voucher system passes, most likely less people will go to the dunes i.e. reducing the usage at Silver Lake. BUT - the County loses revenue to their businesses. Hart is already a dying town and Shelby isn't much better. Also, I doubt the residence in Pentwater can support the county. Silver Lake is the "cash cow" for Oceana County and the County and Sheriffs Office should embrace the tourism and promote the dunes without "fleecing the flock" so to speak.

I was introduced to the Dunes 12 years ago and just loved the area and the fun. I have made many friends during this time and have also introduced my kids and grandkids to this family fun. Enough is enough.. there is so many other trails and off road parks in Michigan that you can have family fun for less money... on top of that to let a company come in out of Canada to run a voucher system my god man pull your head out of your backside and keep it all in the home state of Michigan!!!! The property owners and most of all the business will be the hardest hit....the people up there have to live also and you have taken money out of their pockets..I feel sorry for you if you happen to have a meal in one of the local eateries and you were involved on passing this proposal and they decide to charge you to sit at their table , charge you to read the menu just charged you every farting thing they can think of! I know I would!!!!

if they are going to make us pay I say 10$ is excessive amount for 1 vehicle.. with how many vehicles that are there through out the season they would make way more than enough to cover the online system. and have some money for the "park" so if they are going to charge us it should be way less. I hope they don't charge at all and this whole thing blows over.. but that probably wont happen.

only do 10 dollar vouchers online for the holiday weekends. that money wont go to helping anything but the people who sit in office in Lansing so why give them more money. by the time you time you get the rec passport and orv sticker you have 50 dollars per vehicle and they already raised the price of the orv sticker

Paying a company based in Canada is stupid when the place is in Michigan. Either it's free or keep the money in Michigan.

Really!? More and more rediculous every year. There has to be an easier more affordable/profitable way for both vacationers and the state. Why add more to the process? Simplify it and it will be more appealing to first timers. It's to the point if you do not go with someone who already knows the process you may have driven 300 miles for nothing.
