Unwanted Self Storage Facility in Our Neighborhood

I am speaking at the meeting tonight for the vote on whether or not the City Council will allow a zoning change so that this self storage facility can start building. If we can get them to vote "No" on a zoning change, then they will deny Silver Dollar the go ahead to move forward, and they will be forced to give the property back to the original land owners. There are over 20 storage facilities within 5 miles of our neighborhood. That list grows to over 40 if you expand out to 10 miles. The true financial reason that this property was selected was its close proximity to the new Tarleton campus that is projected to have up to 2,500 students enroll for the fall semester and up to 9,000 as it continues to expand. It was not so that our community could have closer storage access. We already have it! It is my opinion that no matter how genuinely nice the family appears to be this is a business deal for them and they would be smart to tell us whatever we need to hear in order to get it approved. The question that everyone must consider is what will be the impact to our community? You cannot build a project of this size without an impact in one way or another. Do you support this project hoping that they will live up to their word? As others have also said “what happens if they sell to a new owner?” What happens if the zoning commission lets them modify their plans and we do not get what was originally promised in the initial meetings? How do they plan to keep the facility attractive by proposing to rent storage for RV’s and vehicles? What benefit will the community get from this project if the true intentions is the lure college kids to fill up the storage facility? At the very least we will get more traffic that will increase safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists. We will potentially invite more theft which has already been a problem. It will be highly likely that future buyers will be discouraged to move into our neighborhood not wanting a storage facility outside their backyards. Do we not have better alternatives? Office Spaces or Medical Offices…Something less impactful?

Don’t want you in my neighborhood. Increase traffic and crime.

No self storage. I live here and don't want it. It will lower my property value and bring ppl who have no business to be here to my neighborhood. I run and I want to feel safe running in my own area.

I prefer it not be built at that location .

I live in the area, I don’t want any busy business around. It lowers home values!
