While attending my mother's funeral this past month the "train horn" was disturbing to me while we were in 'visitation' & 'funeral service' at FrenchBlasl funeral home. I reside out of state....so was not used to hearing that 'horn' so close to the funeral home. I do realize it is a safety factor for motorists. A quiet zone out of respect would be appropriate. We do have quiet zones in effect in the city I live in.

Is this a joke? I live next to the train and it doesn't bother me at all. Sounds like you should move farther out into the country. I'm guessing you just moved to Chatham?

Being the mental midget you are, you moved in to a place by train tracks?

The “Train Horn Rule” came into effect in 2005
Under the Train Horn Rule (49 CFR Part 222), locomotive engineers must begin to sound train horns at least 15 seconds, and no more than 20 seconds, in advance of all public grade crossings.
The same law allows communities to establish “quiet zones” under specific circumstances, a process which the FRA oversees.
One of the first steps in the process is to have FRA, CSX, and SHA conduct a no-cost diagnostic of the crossing.

Who the hell do you think you are? I am, and many others, are tired of the "newcomers" coming here with their unwelcome ideas! So when did your parents move here? They didn't? OK, then what year did you graduate from Chatham High School? You didn't? OK, then why don't you stay in the background and shut up because you are not a local or member of our community until you have some history!

The trains sound their horn because of safety. I like hearing the train horns. I think that it's not only a safety factor, but it adds a special touch to the quaint Village of Chatham.

i have no problem with train noise having lived with it all of my life here in Chatham. the railroad literally runs next to my backyard. This is a ludicrous petition and i would never support this even though it states that i signed this petition. Not sure how this happened (i merely clicked on this site to read and get a good laugh from the comments made here!) and there is no way to remove my name from such a ridiculous idea. I would like my name removed please whoever you are that created such dribble!

I've lived in Chatham all my life and to be honest ...it. would be the most stupidest thing to silence a train horn!!! I went through a tragic loss due to a train accident. The horn is a warning to stay clear ...and away from the train. Yes OK its loud ..but for most of us who lived in this town forever are used to it!! So for you out of owners who decide to change everything here....please do us all a favor and head back where you came from!!!

The sound of the trains was the background of my life until I moved away. If you didn't want to live or work where you could hear the trains, which are the foundation of Chatham, why did you move there? Surely, you heard them when you visited - or did you just randomly decide one day to up and move all your stuff to a town you'd never visited?
I miss the train whistles. I miss the trains. I don't miss the transplants who want to take over and change things.

I lived in Chatham (on kinderhook st.) for 3 years, I grew up in spencertown where the train was heard at a distance. I understand the frustration of the noise, it rattled my windows when I lived there. The whistle blew at the Woodbridge crossing and down the line to two other crossings. I cringed every time! I never got used to it. I now live in Canaan and have been here for 12 years ( I still here the whistle about 2 miles away at the Canaan tracks).
MY POINT IS.......If you don't like the noise MOVE!!! If you are complaining about something that basically made this town into what is today then obviously you don't appreciate being here and safety must not be a concern of yours either. Why didn't you just start a petition to have the railroad relocate the tracks?! That seems logical!!! Honestly some people think it is all about THEM!

If anyone is interested in the procedure for establishing a new quiet zone, it begins with Section III a few pages in. https://www.fra.dot.gov/eLib/details/L03055

Oh, I notice that one person so far signed the petition twice I don't think that's allowed or an honest thing to do. Also a few of you commented the exact same request more than once ( as if trying to make it look like more people are for it than their really are ) Shameful !!

I have lived in Chatham for 65 years, near the tracks and I love them. They were here before me and I hope long after me. Leave this great village alone!
