Native Americans came here from Asia, so your point makes no sense. As for the hostility toward newcomers - many of the newcomers keep their city attitude and are very rude toward "locals". I remember some newcomers in another town not far fom Chatham complaining about the smell of a nearby dairy farm. That farm has been there long before those people and so have the trains in Chatham. If a Chathamite moved to NYC and complained about the noise or the crowds or the traffic, what would be said? How about, "If you don't like it, don't live there!". There's an obvious reason for the term citiot.

WOOF, WOOF, WOOF... I am Ben Thomas' dog. I am a very friendly little pooch but my dad is a fool. He was dropped on his head as a baby and ever since has experienced ringing in his ears which he believes is train whistles. I feel very sorry for him. He is grumpy most of the time and he suffers from a Napoleon complex. He writes in his petition, (and I quote because I can do quotes) "The Village of Chatham is now on a mission to establish an official “Quiet Zone”." See the Napoleon complex? He's a guy from out of town and he's now speaking as if he is the mayor of Chatham! Ha, ha! My dad is a lonely guy which I think makes him a grumpy guy. He's not so bad he's just become an old fart. Old farts have a tendency to smell bad and no one wants to be around them. The good news is I ran away from home after he started this self-righteous petition and have been enjoying the fields and woods around Chatham. I LOVE the sounds of the train as they rumble through town. Chatham is a wonderful village and those lucky enough to live here know that. This is why so many people are upset when some buffoon full of hot air comes roaring in, attempting to speak for others, making all kinds of noise and righteous indignation. "HOW DARE THESE TRAINS DISTURB MY BEAUTY SLEEP? HOW DARE THESE TRAINS EVEN EXIST WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!" Well, Dear Wonderful Village of Chatham, have no fears, Mr. Thomas will soon be just an odd anecdote heard over the morning biscuits and gravy as the 7:04 comes rumbling by! It might be worth it to ask why there's so much hostility towards the newcomers. Maybe it comes down to things like this - a town that was built around the trains, where pretty much everyone who grew up there loves to hear the sound of the trains - is being asked to change because someone moved there and doesn't like that sound. If someone comes to your home and starts rearranging the furniture, wouldn't you get a little cranky? And, no, I'm not a Native American, but my family lived in Chatham for generations, and yes, I am indeed "from there."

I have lived in Chatham for twelve years -
I don't have the trains in my backyard, but I do live close enough to hear the whistle at night.
It's a lovely and evocative sound.
If you buy a house near the tracks then complain about the whistle...
That's like moving next to a hog farm then complaining about the smell LOL

It makes me sad to see so many nasty comments about people who were not born here. We moved here not only because of the beauty of the area, but because of the 'friendliness' of the people. It's sad to see the friendliness ends at a difference of opinion. I for one, am not bothered by the train and find it kind of nice. If I supported this petition however, I would hope not to be run out of town with a pitchfork. People of Chatham, take a good look at yourselves. The hostility in many of these comments show a greater threat to Chatham being a thriving small town than this petition. Unless you are Native American, you are not from here. So can we please drop hostility towards folks based on time of residence? We all want a strong Chatham.

Ben Thomas of Albany, NY, If you don't live in Chatham, then what right do you have to try to change the Village? The trains were an establishing factor in the history of Chatham and now gives the village character. If you just moved here, you should have done your research before moving near the tracks. Many, many people live near the tracks and don't complain about it. Actually you get used to it rather quickly. I live under 200 feet from the tracks, and within the first week of living here I didn't wake up from the trains in the middle of the night. Your petition reads like an obnoxious infomercial. Take the energy you're wasting trying to get the trains silenced and use it elsewhere for something that will actually positively effect the Chatham area.

My condolences on your mom's passing. However, you obviously don't live in Chatham, so why would you find it necessary to change things there?
