I’m very concerned about STR’s. We bought here for a sense of peace, tranquility and community. I don’t want to see HL turn into a party lake community.

I don't have an issue with rentals as long as the renters abide by the club and town rules.

Great idea to put a hold on any decision for now and until all members can voice their opinion on the subject. I for one think there are more negatives than positive reasons for not allowing any more STR’s. Mainly peace and tranquillity and a feeling of community.

I think air b&b’s should not have access to the beaches. They are small enough for full-time residents and they don’t take care of them!

Please also consider that STR rules can differ for HL MEMBERS renting in their own to HL RENTERS, such as renting to a friend for a family wedding, summer vacation etc. it would be the HL member as Renter, who is responsible for the people who Occupy the house ( guest badges, etc)

Businesses are not allowed in Highland Lakes. The only people who benefit are the people who own the properties. I am watching 6 people on the ice at a STR rental

There was a seven day minimum for ALL rentals, not 1 or two days as currently allowed

Control of STR should be a priority of the Board of Trustees since weekend rentals have a negative impact on the quality of life in our community. No one wants to live next to or around "The Party House". We believe that rentals of a minimum of one week would be more conducive to bringing calmer tenants and creating a more relaxed community.

Time is of the essence. The longer these STR continue, the harder it will be to control.

We are subject to the definitions set up by Vernon Township: an STR is a property rented for less than 30 days each time, and not more than 180 days per year

Hi, Thanks for your comments. We are working on some ideas to present to the Board similar to your middle ground suggestions.

I love Airbnb and getting to fully experience a new environment. Getting to explore this area is one of the reasons we moved here full time. There’s good stories, like ours in the mix here. Just wanted to mention that as this conversation unfolds this year.
That said, investors buying up houses exclusively for STRs OR rowdy guests should be policed or banned. I think there’s a lot that can be done to weed out the bad and still retain the good.
Just some ideas that could be a middle ground:
1. Property must be purchased in a name, not an LLC
2. Minimum stay of 7 days
3. Heavy fines for guests/hosts who break the noise rules
4. Subletting only allowed after 1yr of ownership
As a new member here, I’m really happy to be part of such a great community where people care about the environment and their surroundings. I look forward to assisting in anyway to help retain the specialness of this place!

While I don't know if a moratorium is legally feasible in the immediate term. I am concerned about the impact of STRs and I do believe current rules, fees, penalties and enforcement is inadequate to protect the Highland Lakes experience owners & their families have enjoyed for decades.

A moratorium would help to give us all breathing room and for the Board to discuss how this issue can be managed. I am vehemently opposed to investors buying up multiple properties for the purpose of listing them as STR's which is the case within half mile of my home.
