The problem isn't that someone like this monster had access to an AR or other semi autos, it's the fact he had ANY access to firearms, this wouldn't have been an acceptable tragedy had he carried it out with a pump action shotgun,

Failings of the system and the department's responsible for their operation need to be fully investigated. New Zealand shooters want meaningful change that will act to prevent anything like this ever occuring in NZ again, not just a knee jerk, unrationalised decision without any consultation. NZ shooters deal with the NZ firearms legislation on a daily basis, they can provide some of the most meaningful feedback to proposed changes and actively wish to be involved!

We need to understabd how excstly this horrific attack came about. What failing there was of govt, police and his gun club if any. If we dont learn how he got through the system we cant make it stronger.

Can not blame tool that crime is used. Terrorist is not about what tool is used. IT IS ABOUT WHAT IDEOLOGY IN SOME PEOPLE HAD BAD INTEDTIONS.

Blame the man not the tools. He also had explosives. He'd also planned for two years, long enough to acquire firearms illegally. A man with evil intentions will not follow the law, and the facts are that criminals aren't just sourcing firearms from local theft. We need to stop knee jerk policy that punishes the country for the acts of one person. The firearms owning community didn't cause this. It was one deranged man.

The last poorly considered changes to arms laws may well have contributed to the terrorists access to his illegal weapon accessories.

By any international measure, NZ's gun laws have been very successful in terms of public safety. The current wave of hysteria will eventually recede and give the opportunity for some cool, clear heads to consider if the law needs to be changed. Not waiting until then smacks of grisly opportunism , of exploiting a tragedy.

Democracy must be observed. If you rush to make decisions you will make terrible ones. And this is exactly what this terrorist wants

A proper inquiry will produce effective and balanced law change. Knee jerk policy changes are likely to do more harm than good.

High capacity magazine loopholes need to be closed. Police also need to step up. They want a register of all firearms. They currently cannot even keep the B & C category registers accurately. The name address and licence of every firearm buyer sold through a licenced dealer has to be recorded buy law, why aren't police collecting and cataloguing that data?
