This is a petition from the greatly concerned citizens who will be negatively affected by the NOAA, NMFS Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Fishery Management Plan Amendment 3 to ban the use of shark gillnet gear in the Southeast Atlantic fishing area. The banning of gillnet shark gear will have an adverse economic impact on the shark fishing industry and the community. The data collected by NMFS, NOAA is grossly inaccurate and does not truly reflect what we the undersigned are actually landing on our trips. Furthermore, gillnet gear is highly selective allowing more juvenile blacknose sharks to pass thru and therefore have a better chance to reach sexual maturity.
We the undersigned, call on NMFS, NOAA, and the SAFMC to stop the proposed banning of shark gillnet gear in the Southeast Atlantic Region. The data is too inaccurate to support this ban and the economic future of fishermen and their community is in grave danger.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
The bureaucrats at NOAA and NMFS are finally starting to feel the heat from our movement. They cannot keep burying their heads in the sand while they destroy our livelihoods with their bogus, inaccurate data. We are hitting our stride now and they have no choice but to pay attention to our fight.

Ridiculous to shut down an entire industry based on bad info. Fix the data before you destroy the local economy.

I see what gets brought in every day at the docks. Whoever wrote that report needs to come out on a boat and see for themselves.

My husband has been fishing these waters forever. The stats they are using are totally wrong. Leave the boats alone!

Total government overreach. We know how to manage our own gear better than someone sitting in an office.
