This guy deserves a medal, not a discharge. Far too often we hear about our own troops committing atrocities; if the military can attract more people like Charles Martland atrocities would be far less likely to happen at home and abroad.

Why would ANYONE join the military if men of good conscience are punished for defending a child against a rapist?

This man has offered his life for our nation, kicking him out of something that he has sacrificed so much for would truly embarrass me as an American.

This is a complete breakdown on our government's morale compass! How dare they do this to a warrior defending a child.

Charles Martland is what our military is SUPPOSED to be. His actions represented my ideals as a citizen and our country's ideals. He should be celebrated, not punished for the most basic level of human decency.

I am a mother of a Marine Corporal and I would only hope that my son would respond in the same manner as SFC Martland. It is truly disturbing how this current President's lack of support has filtered down through the ranks of our military. You all have brought shame to our country by the actions you are taking against this brave american.

I've never been more proud of a soldier in my life! We should be rewarding his action not punishing him! I don't know what power the president has in this situation. If he has any he should exercise that power immediately and punish those responsible and reinstate this decorated soldier!

From the reports I've seen, Sgt Martland's actions are the same as those of most Americans would be in context. Americans put Sandusky in jail for thirty years for the same thing the Afghan policeman did. The Afghani just got
a little roughing up. An aversion to chaining a boy to a bed to keep him as a sex slave just comes with being an
American. A soldier who deports himself that way is what the army got when he enlisted - he won't change.
As for the general who wrote the derogatory remark - he is showing respect for the Afghgan way of life. But if we
as a nation respected them, we wouldn't have invaded them. If there must be derogs going down, then the general should get one on his fitness report. Let's keep Sgt Martland and do without the officer. Jim
