Just because Afghani culture tolerates child rape and blames the victim, does not mean we should. We sent our troops into Afghanistan and sacrificed a lot of people's lives to drive out the Taliban, but for what? To allow another group to rule that is just as heinous? Rape is a grotesque violation of human rights regardless of strategic or tactical aims. Sergeant Martland was doing the right thing, the honourable thing. He should not be punished for that.

Legally what he should have done or not, a slap on the wrist would have sufficed, followed by the army doing what it needs to do to combat the problem and send the right message to the world. Real disciplinary action, followed by an involuntary discharge for having the record, has sent the wrong message to the world.

I have served in the United States Navy sailed the Pacific honorably this is a disgrace to condemn, this Green Beret for protecting the rights of others. Be careful of the message that you send. God bless the United States Veterans and the Red and Black brotherhood.

What has our country come to discipline an upstanding decorated hero for doing what he was trained for to PROTECT!. They are fools if they do not PORTECT Charles MArtland. If Obama or the government does not protect this man and that boy I hate to say it but who will protect them and their children from the same thing happening to them. They think they are invincible to Karma. You treat others how you want to be treated. Let's hope he pulls through on this one Barak?

I can't believe we are letting our people, our servicemen and women down so badly after they give their life and families to our Country and he is a good Americanan if in a lawless situation like that has taken head on such a criminal guilty of such a hienous crime. It is a disgrace. He should be decorated not punished and if he used force he did it to counterbalance the force shown by a uniformed man who was a corrupt person abusing his autority.

These US Soldiers stepped up and took action for a helpless mother and her son. They did what so many others refused to do or were to afraid to do. They should be honored for their bravery - they are true American Heroes!

This is an absolute travesty. The problem stems from the US military allowing these rapes of innocent children to continue.

SFC Martland should be given a Medal, and should be honored as a role model to all Americans, not just the ones in uniform.
