This is outrageous that one of our own military is to be tried to help out a child and his mother that was being abused the their own, I stand up and applaud him for taking a stand against the police that did this horrible thing to the little boy and I think we need more men like him!!! Do not let this guy leave our military as we need more men like him!!!

This brave man deserves a medal not being kicked out of the Army. What he did was show that we should never allow this type of evil to continue.

This soldier deserves a medal! If discipline must be given, this Vietnam vet says it should be no greater than an Article 15.

This is such a disgrace that a outstanding solider would be discharged for something that any caring American would do.. Shame on you!!!! The military needs to keep SFC Martland, and reward him for his actions for protecting a woman and her child...

We shouldn't punish heroes under the guise of "staying out of other people's business." If people let things like this go on, and do nothing, they are just as guilty of the crime themselves, and allow things like this to knowingly persist!

So disappointed and ashamed of how the military senior staff are handling this issue. May they see the error of their beliefs and do the right honor this soldier, not punish him.

As an Army officer during the Vietnam war, I find this treatment of SFC Martland and Capt. Quinn shameful. As I read what happened, it appeared to me that Sergeant Martland and Captain Quinn did attempt to get the jerk to see that what he was doing was wrong and would not win the hearts and minds of the people he was to protect. When he displayed a lack of interest they then forced him out of the camp. This scumbag should also have been forced out of his position by the brigadier that reprimanded Sergeant Martland and Capt. Quinn. This did not happen and exposes why we are not winning "the hearts and minds" of the everyday Afghans. We aren't changing anything for them and when we leave, they will have the same scumbags running their lives as before we entered their country. Who would you support if your were in their position, the ones leaving or the ones staying?

I was an officer during the Vietnam war. What I read here reminds me that politics without morals is still alive and well in the US Army.
I read Col Steve Johnson's justification for the reprimand and discharge. A reprimand should not be considered as a reason for someone to be disqualified from service. Article 15 or above should be the only benchmarks to be considered. I disagree with the reaction of the US Army's decision and we have been given insight into why this war has gone on and we are not winning the hearts of the population. SFC Charles Martland and Capt. Quinn acted in response to the victims cries for help and apparently tried to get the criminal to see it was not appropriate for a chief of police (this guy should have been removed from the program). Their superiors' poor judgement probably earned the mother of the child a second beating and possibly a second round of rape for the child (or worse) as those superiors sent the message that they condoned the misconduct of the person they were knowingly training as the chief of police. Disgusting and unconscionable. SFC Martland should be retained in service.

This is what happens when you have spineless people in leadership positions. They try to throw SFC Martland and his team leader under the bus to cover their own butts, and for what? A corrupt child rapist.
This says it all about our current government. I guess obama condones this crap since he hasn't even acknowledged the sergeant and capts plight

This man is what a true American looks like. He went willing to die for his country and he beat up a child rapist. He didn't even hurt the guy that much, if the Army discharges him this will show the extreme problem of our government.
